Cowgirl Soccer Top 20 Moments, 1996-2014
August 04, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
The Oklahoma State Cowgirl soccer program will mark its 20th season in 2015. As we celebrate two decades of milestones, OSU head coach Colin Carmichael and assistant coach Karen Hancock, who each have been with the program since its inception and served stints as head coaches to help build the program into a national power, collaborated on a list of the top 20 moments in Cowgirl soccer history. Over the next month, we'll reveal their list (which is in no particular order) on www.okstate.com.
Â
First-ever NCAA Tournament win — 2-0 over UNC-Greensboro in 2006
Â
Oklahoma State had made just one trip to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship prior to 2006, that coming in 2003 and resulting in an opening round loss to Auburn in Tallahassee, Fla.
Â
The Cowgirls' second NCAA tourney berth came three years later, and the 2006 team would make history when they traveled to Clemson, S.C. to take on UNC Greensboro.
Â
Sophomore All-American Yolanda Odenyo led OSU to a 2-0 win over the Spartans as the Cowgirls improved to 17-3-2 on the season.
Â
Odenyo and Niccole Grimaldi combined for a double assist on OSU's first goal, which came from Sasa Jackson in the game's 38th minute. Odenyo then sealed the win in the 80th minute with an unassisted goal.
Â
Erin Stigler recorded the shutout in goal, her seventh of the season, as she collected three saves.
Â
OSU owned a 16-13 advantage in shots during the match and recorded a 9-3 edge on corner kicks.
Â
Colin Carmichael: "We'd been in the NCAA Tournament once and lost to Auburn at Florida State so we didn't have a lot of experience. But we had a good team. The first goal was Sasa Jackson; it was a knockdown — we headed it down and Sasa scored to make it 1-0. Then Yolanda (Odenyo) scored the second to ice it. It was just a relief more than anything to get that win and advance to the next round."
