Courtney Dike - Nigeria #10
Cowgirl Soccer Top 20 Moments, 1996-2014
August 12, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
The Oklahoma State Cowgirl soccer program will mark its 20th season in 2015. As we celebrate two decades of milestones, OSU head coach Colin Carmichael and assistant coach Karen Hancock, who each have been with the program since its inception and served stints as head coaches to help build the program into a national power, collaborated on a list of the top 20 moments in Cowgirl soccer history. This week, we'll reveal the five remaining moments on their list (which is in no particular order) on www.okstate.com.
Â
Courtney Dike makes Nigeria National Team and plays in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, including starting vs. the United States
Â
Only a select few elite athletes get to play on their sport's biggest stage.
Â
Courtney Dike became one of those athletes in the summer of 2015 when she earned a spot on the Nigeria National Team for the FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.
Â
A junior at OSU, Dike became the first-ever Oklahoman to play in a Women's World Cup match when she took the field against Australia on June 12, and just four days later, she was in the Super Falcons' starting lineup against the United States. She played 50 minutes against the eventual World Cup champion U.S. squad before subbing out early in the second half.
Â
Dike concluded her first trip to the Women's World Cup with two caps, playing 56 minutes and recording one shot. Nigeria finished 0-2-1 at the tourney and failed to advance out of Group D.
Â
Dike, who was born in Oklahoma City and raised in Edmond, Okla. (her parents, Vincent and Jacinta, are natives of Nigeria), is a two-time All-Big 12 Conference performer who recorded 16 goals and seven assists in her first two collegiate seasons.
Â
Colin Carmichael: "Watching Courtney Dike walk out in that Nigeria jersey against the U.S. in one of the most-watched women's soccer games in history, and certainly in this World Cup, was unbelievable. For Courtney, it was an honor for her to be on the field with that many elite athletes. For us as coaches watching her walk out, you kind of teared up a little bit and had goose bumps because that's one of your kids out there playing on the biggest stage in the world. She's just an amazing kid."
