Cowgirl Soccer Top 20 Moments, 1996-2014
August 10, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
The Oklahoma State Cowgirl soccer program will mark its 20th season in 2015. As we celebrate two decades of milestones, OSU head coach Colin Carmichael and assistant coach Karen Hancock, who each have been with the program since its inception and served stints as head coaches to help build the program into a national power, collaborated on a list of the top 20 moments in Cowgirl soccer history. This week, we'll reveal the five remaining moments on their list (which is in no particular order) on www.okstate.com.
Â
Beating four top-10 ranked teams in 2007 (#9 Notre Dame, #5 Missouri, #8 Texas, #9 San Diego)
Â
Oklahoma State's 2007 schedule proved to be one of the nation's toughest, but that year's team was up to the task and rose to the occasion numerous times.
Â
En route to a 14-6-3 record in which the Cowgirls advanced to the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, OSU upset four top-10 ranked teams during that memorable season.
Â
The first may have been the biggest. That came on Sept. 16 in South Bend, Indiana, as the 16th-ranked Cowgirls knocked off No. 9 Notre Dame on its home field. The Fighting Irish had not lost at home since 2003, but OSU's 2-1 overtime victory ended that 43-game home unbeaten streak, which was the third longest in NCAA history.
Â
Siera Strawser and Sasa Jackson recorded the OSU scores in that contest, with Jackson notching the golden goal, and goalie Erin Stigler racked up eight saves.
Â
The next two top-10 wins came against Big 12 Conference opponents. On Oct. 5, the Cowgirls topped No. 5 Missouri, 2-1, in another overtime victory.
Â
OSU erased a 1-0 halftime deficit against the Tigers as Strawser knotted things in the 57th minute before Kasey Langdon, who recorded an assist on Strawser's goal, netted the game winner 3:08 into overtime to hand Mizzou its first conference loss.
Â
Upset number three came just over a week later as No. 8 Texas came to Stillwater and left a 1-0 loser thanks to a Strawser goal in the 70th minute. Stigler recorded seven saves in the shutout performance.
Â
OSU's final victory over a top-10 team came in its last win of the season in the opening round of the NCAA tourney. In that game, the Cowgirls took on No. 9 San Diego in Los Angeles.
Â
And it was the usual suspects propelling OSU to a win as Straswer recorded the Cowgirls' first goal in the 57th minute to tie things at 1-1 before Langdon provided the late game winner with just over four minutes left in regulation.
Â
OSU's bid for a fifth top-10 win came up short two days later as top-ranked UCLA, led by Lauren Cheney and Danesha Adams, bested the Cowgirls, 4-0.
Â
Colin Carmichael: "Depending on the schedule you play, that's hard to do — you might not even play that many top 10 teams and to beat four of them was awesome. The Notre Dame game stands out because they were on some crazy four-year unbeaten run at home so to end that was difficult but gave us a lot of confidence. The Missouri game was overtime, and Kasey Langdon scored to win it on the road. And San Diego was at the NCAA Tournament so for us to play the No. 9 team and win and then play the No. 1 team in UCLA a couple days later, that was probably the toughest opening weekend in NCAA Tournament history for just about any team.
Â
"All of those games were special and to do that all in one season showed again how good that team was."
