Cowgirl Soccer Top 20 Moments, 1996-2014
July 29, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
The Oklahoma State Cowgirl soccer program will mark its 20th season in 2015. As we celebrate two decades of milestones, OSU head coach Colin Carmichael and assistant coach Karen Hancock, who each have been with the program since its inception and served stints as head coaches to help build the program into a national power, collaborated on a list of the top 20 moments in Cowgirl soccer history. Over the next month, we'll reveal their list (which is in no particular order) on www.okstate.com.
Â
2002 Bedlam game in Stillwater
Â
Jeni Jackson scored just three goals in her Oklahoma State career.
Â
Those three scores all came in one game, in a 5:49 span, and are three of the most memorable in Cowgirl soccer history.
Â
It was the final regular season game of 2002, with OSU squaring off against Bedlam-rival Oklahoma at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex. On the line — besides state bragging rights — was a trip to the Big 12 Conference Soccer Championship.
Â
For 84 minutes, it looked like OSU's dream of clinching the first postseason berth in program history would be dashed by the Sooners.
Â
Jackson had other thoughts.
Â
With OSU trailing 2-0 and just 5:49 left in the match, Jackson finally got the Cowgirls on the scoreboard when she found the back of the net off a corner kick by Nikki Wojtowicz.
Â
Just 31 seconds later, the score was tied when Jackson took a pass from Carla Dolomont and netted the equalizer.
Â
With the Cowgirls riding that momentum, Jackson decided to go ahead and secure an OSU win, and she did just that when she scored off a Cassie Lewis assist with only 19 ticks remaining on the game clock.
Â
Adding to the improbability of Jackson's heroics— she was a defender who took only 11 shots all season (in 20 games).
Â
Jackson's hat trick secured a No. 8 seed for OSU at the Big 12 Championship in San Antonio, giving the Cowgirls that coveted first postseason berth.
Â
Colin Carmichael: "To be down 2-0 in the last six minutes and come back and win 3-2 in any game would be amazing, but to do it against your rival made it even sweeter. And then for a center back, who those were the only goals of her career, to score all three just made it surreal. Incredible. I remember thinking when we were down 2-0 that we didn't deserve that because we had played very well. But OU was good. We thought if we just got that first goal, we had a chance and sure enough, the momentum just shifted. We scored two within about a minute, and then Jeni popped up with the last one. That was a great moment against our fiercest rival."
