Cowgirl Soccer Top 20 Moments, 1996-2014
July 21, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
The Oklahoma State Cowgirl soccer program will mark its 20th season in 2015. As we celebrate two decades of milestones, OSU head coach Colin Carmichael and assistant coach Karen Hancock, who each have been with the program since its inception and served stints as head coaches to help build the program into a national power, collaborated on a list of the top 20 moments in Cowgirl soccer history. Over the next month, we'll reveal their list (which is in no particular order) daily on www.okstate.com.
Â
NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 win over Duke in 2010
Â
A week after advancing past the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship for the first time in program history, the Cowgirls achieved another first as they knocked off Duke, 2-0, at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex to earn a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight.
Â
A record crowd of 1,943 fans saw sixth-ranked OSU improve to 20-3-2 as they earned a spot in the NCAA quarterfinals.
Â
OSU took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Megan Marchesano took a pass from Krista Lopez and delivered a blast from the top of the 18-yard box into the back of the net. In the second half, Lopez would notch a goal of her own in the second half as she scored her 15th of the season off an assist from Kristen Kelley. The goal tied Lopez for the second-most goals in single season in school history.
Â
Goalie AD Franch recorded a pair of saves to collect her ninth shutout of the season, and the OSU defense stood strong against a furious Duke attack down the stretch to secure the victory.
Â
Colin Carmichael: "When we advanced to the Sweet 16, we were either going to Florida to play the seeded Florida Gators or hosting Duke. I think Duke beat Florida in a shootout so when we got the news we were hosting, it was a huge deal. And then the interest in the game and the ticket sales it generated was amazing. There were about 2,000 people there that night, and the atmosphere was electric. Our kids played great. It was one of our best performances in that sort of four-year run that we had.
Â
"Megan Marchesano's goal stands out. She cut inside, faked out the defender and buried one, and we never looked back. It was a huge moment to advance to the Elite Eight, and certainly when you beat a traditional power like Duke it means a lot."Â
