Cowgirls Walk Off On UMBC In NCAA Stillwater Regional Opener
May 19, 2023 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – Kelly Maxwell's 10-strikeout performance led the No. 6 national seed Oklahoma State Softball team to a 9-0 run-rule victory over UMBC, Friday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium.
With the result, OSU moved to 42-14, while UMBC fell to 26-16. The Pokes advance into the second round of the Stillwater Regional and await the winner of Wichita State vs. Nebraska to find out their next opponent; that contest is set for tomorrow with a 2 p.m. CT first pitch.
Oklahoma State extended its NCAA Regional winning streak to 10 games with the win today, all of which have happened at the NCAA Stillwater Regional.
A lengthy weather delay pushed the official start time to 6:30 p.m. CT, three and a half hours later than the scheduled 3 p.m. CT start time.
The Cowgirls starter, Kelly Maxwell, was unfazed by the late start and improved to 15-5 after pitching 5.0 shutout innings and tallying double-digit strikeouts for the first time since April 14.
With her 10-strikeout performance today, Maxwell elevated her season total to 208, and became just the sixth Cowgirl in program history to tally 200+ strikeouts in multiple seasons at Oklahoma State.
OSU was first to score, piecing together two singles to open the third inning. Katelynn Carwile broke the scoreless deadlock with an RBI single to right field to give the Pokes a 1-0 lead.
After another lockdown inning from Maxwell in the circle, the Cowgirls broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning, as the Cowgirls hit for the cycle as a team.
After Tallen Edwards opened the inning with a single, Megan Bloodworth followed up to score Edwards with an RBI double, extending the lead to 2-0.
Kiley Naomi's third career triple brought in two more runs, then Micaela Wark hit a two-run moonshot, pushing Oklahoma State's lead to 6-0.
Morgyn Wynne opened the fifth inning with the second triple of her career, a rocket off the center field wall. True freshman Tallen Edwards brought her home in the next at-bat with an RBI double, elevating the Pokes' lead to 7-0.
In the sixth inning, Naomi walked off with a two-run shot to left, elevating her to a career-high four RBI on the night.
With the win today, coach Kenny Gajewski improved his head coaching record in the Regional round of the NCAA D1 Softball Championship to 16-6.
