OSU Track & Field Completes First Day of Big 12 Outdoor Championships with Several All-Conference Honorees

NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma State track & field postseason action Friday at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Norman, Okla., with several impressive performances on the day.
 
At the end of the first day of competition, both the Cowboys and Cowgirls scored points in each of the three events scored thus far, as OSU stands in contention at fourth place in the men's and women's team races.
 
For the Cowboys, Isai Rodriguez got things started in the 10,000 Meters, where he placed second in a tightly contested race with Kansas' Chandler Gibbens. In possibly his final race in Big 12 competition, Rodriguez secured an early eight points for the Cowboys with his 29:43.06 finish. With Rodriguez' strong showing, including a sub-minute final split, he earned his eighth second-place finish across all Big 12 Championships in his career.
 
Molly Born opened the scoring for the Cowgirls, capturing six points in the women's 10K. In just her second race of the outdoor season, Born finished third overall with a time of 34:37.13, standing as the lone runner in the way of Iowa State sweeping the podium.
 
In the men's Decathlon, Philip Frank led the way for the Cowboys after the first half of the competition. Frank landed on the podium in two events, the 100 Meter Dash and Long Jump, scoring personal bests in both. Additionally, he set a personal best in the 400 Meter Dash, finishing in 49.50 seconds. He ended the day in third place with 4,041 points and is well on the way to setting a personal best (7,188 points).
 
Cowgirl multis Olivija Vaitaityte and Annie Molenhouse got off to a strong start in the women's Heptathlon. Vaitaityte scored a third-place finish in the High Jump with her season best 1.70-meter leap, while Molenhouse scored a fourth-place effort in the Shot Put with a 12.09-meter toss. Molenhouse also set outdoor personal bests in the 100 Meter Hurdles and the 200 Meter Dash, finishing the races in 14.71 and 25.14 seconds, respectively.
 
At the end of the first day's events, Vaitaityte is in fifth place with 3,246 points, while Molenhouse is in eighth place with 3,099 points.
 
Freshman Rachel Neaves made her outdoor Big 12 championship debut in the Hammer Throw, where she threw a personal-best 59.95 meters on her third attempt and contributed four points to the team score. Neaves, who is already No. 4 on OSU's leaderboard in the event, tightens the gap between herself and Caitlin Way's 60.02-meter launch at the 2013 Outdoor Big 12 Championship for third in OSU history.
 
On the men's side in the Hammer Throw, Sam Mason set a personal best of his own, breaking the 60-meter mark for the first time in his career. His 60.73-meter throw notched five points for the Cowboys and solidifies his place in second on OSU's leaderboard, trailing only Olympian Nick Miller at the top.
 
Bailey Golden and Micalah Millard teamed up to put six points on the board for the Cowgirls in the Javelin Throw competition. Golden earned a fifth-place finish after launching a 44.71-meter throw, while Millard secured a seventh-place finish with a 44.07-meter toss.
 
On the men's side, Nate Nuthman set a personal best with a 55.74-meter launch. With his seventh-place finish, he scored two points and became the third Cowboy to contribute to scoring on the day.
 
Action for the Cowboys and Cowgirls continues Saturday at 10 a.m. for the second half of the Heptathlon and Decathlon, followed by various qualifying track races.
