Taylor Roe Takes Third in Women's 3K as Cowgirls Finish in Top 25 for Third Straight Season
March 11, 2023 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Oklahoma State distance runner Fouad Messaoudi took home his second NCAA title of the weekend in the men's 3,000 Meters Saturday night, as OSU finished tied for sixth and 21st on the men's and women's sides, respectively, at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
After running the 1,200 Meter opening leg of Friday's title-winning Distance Medley Relay squad, Messaoudi claimed his second indoor NCAA Title in the 3K. Before this weekend, a Cowboy individual hadn't claimed a title in an NCAA indoor competition since Paul Larkins in 1986. Messaoudi contributed 20 of the Cowboys' 25 points scored on their way to their sixth-place finish. OSU's sixth-place performance is tied for the second-highest finish in program history, which was also accomplished under Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Dave Smith in 2014.
For Smith, it's the third time he's coached the men's indoor squad into the top 10.
"It was an incredible weekend," Smith said. "This is the most incredible indoor meet in the world every single year with the level of competition and the depths of the field. We had collegiate and national records set all over the place and the meet threatened a couple world records. Just being at the meet and watching it is inspiring and humbling."
Messaoudi, Alex Maier and Ryan Schoppe took on the loaded 3K field and combined for 14 points. Messaoudi and Maier took control early in the race, lumping themselves with the top eight racers from start-to-finish. Messaoudi and Northern Arizona's Drew Bosley were neck-in-neck in the final thousand meters, each never falling out of the top five. In the final stretch, Messaoudi slipped past Bosley to claim his second NCAA indoor title on the weekend, finishing with a time of 7:48.10. Messaoudi put forth the fastest split of the race, finishing the final 200 meters in 26.77 seconds.
"Fouad Messaoudi, what can you say?" Smith said. "He can run the 1,200 in the DMR, he can win the 3K, he's a first team All-American in Cross Country. Watching him today, he is one of the toughest, grittiest and most-competitive people I think I've ever met. He just refuses to lose. Closing that last 200 in 26.77 seconds in a 3K up here at altitude, it's mind-blowing."
Messaoudi and Maier, who finished fifth, collected first team All-American honors for the second time this weekend and both of their third indoor accolade overall. Maier competed in Friday's 5,000 Meters race, where he placed eighth. Schoppe picked up second team All-America honors, his third time reaching All-American status. It's also his second recognition this weekend, after becoming an NCAA champion as the anchor leg of Friday's DMR.
"Maier had hoped for a better result in the 5K, but somehow found a way to come back in the second event and muster a fifth-place finish," Smith said. "Really great running from him."
Cowgirl 3,000 Meter record-holder Taylor Roe reached the podium for the second straight season in the 3K, crossing the line in 9:13.22. Roe's third place finish placed her on each step in the top five spots on the podium in her career, en route to earning her second All-American honor on the weekend (Friday's DMR), fourth in indoor competition and seventh overall. Roe has now placed on the podium in consecutive years in the 3K event.
"For Taylor coming back after a DMR she wasn't thrilled with and rallying to take a shot at defending her title, I'm proud of her for the way she bounced back from a day that was disappointing for her," Smith said.
Roe's performance catapulted the Cowgirls to a 21st place finish overall, which is the fourth time Smith led a squad to the top 25 on the women's side and the 11th time in program history.
"The way our kids competed blows my mind at just how gritty, tough and competitive they are," Smith said.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls now have their sights set on the upcoming outdoor season, which kicks off in Waco, Texas, at the Baylor Invitational March 24-25.
