2023 Big 12 Championships Pre-Seeds
STILLWATER – Nine Cowboys received their seeds for the Big 12 Wrestling Championships taking place March 4-5 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the conference announced Monday.
Set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, the first three sessions of the event will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The championship round will air on ESPNU at 8 p.m. on Sunday night.
Daton Fix was the lone Cowboy to receive the top-seed in his bracket at 133 pounds, marking the third time in his career he has entered as the top seed at the weight class.
Reigning Big 12 champions Dustin Plott and Kaden Gfeller are seeded second in their respective weight classes. At 174 pounds, Plott sits behind Missouri's Peyton Mocco, who he defeated in last season's title match. The wrestlers have split their two meetings this season with Plott winning in the Southern Scuffle finals, 12-7, while Mocco downed Plott, 4-3, for his first win over the Cowboy in the dual in Stillwater. After two conference titles at 149 pounds, Gfeller is the second seed at 157 pounds behind North Dakota State's Jared Franek, who is ranked third in the country with a 19-1 record.
Travis Wittlake received the third seed in his first appearance at the Big 12 tournament in his new weight class. A 2020 Big 12 champion at 165 pounds, Wittlake bumped to 184 this season where he went 16-4 in the regular season. The two wrestlers seeded above him are No. 2 Parker Keckeisen (UNI) and No. 4 Marcus Coleman (ISU).
A pair of Cowboys enter the weekend as the fourth seed in their respective brackets, including Carter Young (141) and Luke Surber (197). Both making their second appearances at the Big 12 Championships, Young placed seventh last season at 141 pounds, while Surber finished runner-up at heavyweight.
Victor Voinovich will be the five seed at 149 pounds in his postseason debut for Oklahoma State. He has compiled a 14-8 record thus far in his redshirt freshman season. Wyatt Sheets will deal with a loaded field at 165 pounds beginning the tournament as the sixth seed at 165 pounds. Konner Doucet will also make his first appearance at the Big 12 Championships as the eighth seed at heavyweight.
Reece Witcraft will compete at 125 poudns for the Cowboys, but is unseeded heading into the tournament. Witcraft has been the starter at 125 pounds for OSU since Feb. 3 and has gone 1-5 in dual matches at the weight this season.
The NCAA released its conference allocations last week and gave the Big 12 conference a total of 65 automatic bids. The conference received six automatic qualifiers for 125, 133, 174 and 197, seven spots for 141, 149 and 157, eight for 165 and heavyweight and four bids at 184 pounds. Wrestlers who finish within those places at the conference tournament will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, while those who do not must rely on a limited number of at-large spots.
