Young, Former Cowboy Wrestlers Ready for World Team Trials
May 20, 2022 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Current Oklahoma State wrestler Carter Young and several former Cowboys will take on the World Team Trials in Coralville, Iowa on May 21-22.
The World Team Trials will determine the participants in the Final X Series taking place in early June that will decide the U.S. Senior World Team. At
Young recently wrapped up his true freshman season for OSU as an NCAA qualifier at 141 pounds with a 12-9 record overall. In September, Young wrestled at the 2021 Senior World Team Trials at 61 kg and took bronze suffering his only loss to Daton Fix, while defeating two former national champions. This weekend, Young is registered in a tough 65 kg bracket, which is closer to his college weight.
Sitting two spots above Young who holds the No. 12 seed is two-time national champion Dean Heil at No. 10 in the 65 kg bracket. Both wrestlers will be looking to advance to the championship round in order to qualify for Final X: New York as there was no automatic bid to Final X at the weight class.
Jordan Oliver will wrestle as the third seed at 70 kg behind No. 1 Alec Pantaleo and No. 2 Ryan Deakin. Should Oliver advance to the semifinals, he will likely face Deakin, who is coming off of an NCAA individual title at 157 pounds with the winner earning a spot in Final X: Stillwater in what could be a homecoming to Gallagher-Iba Arena for Oliver.
At 79 kg, a battle for one spot in Final X will ensue with former Cowboy Alex Dieringer taking on the bracket as the third seed. U.S. Open champion David McFadden is the top seed followed by Stanford assistant coach Vincenzo Joseph who defeated Dieringer in the semifinal round of the Open. The winner of the World Team Trials at 79 kg will square off with six-time World and Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs at Final X: New York.
The final former Cowboy competing at the Trials comes at heavyweight with Derek White starting out as the No. 11 seed. With Olympic and NCAA champion Gable Steveson declining his automatic berth to Final X, a top two finish will advance White to Final X.
The 2022 World Team Trials will begin Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with the first round and continue through the semifinal rounds Satuday night. Sunday morning will consist of consolations and medal matches, while the best-of-three championship bouts will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. A live stream along with updated brackets and results will be available on Flowrestling.org.
