Paving the Way: Bresha Marshall's Impact On Cowgirl Golf
February 24, 2022 | Cowgirl Golf
As we venture through Black History Month, it's important to honor the legacy of those who paved the way in Oklahoma State Athletics. Bresha Marshall did that and more during her time as a Cowgirl.
Marshall is a key part of the history of Oklahoma State Athletics as she was the first African American to play for the Cowgirl squad. She transferred to Oklahoma State in 1995 to play for legendary coach Ann Pitts.
"It was hard," Marshall said. "I was in the same position (Tiger) Woods was in when I first started."
Marshall's career started at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. She won the Sunbelt Conference Championship as a freshman and earned five top-20 finished at Lamar before Pitts recognized her ability and brought her to Stillwater in 1995.
Her attraction to OSU came in part from Pitts and the quality reputation of the program Stillwater's welcoming and quiet environment.
Marshall played alongside Jojo Robertson, women's golf coach at Texas Tech and sister to current OSU coach Greg Robertson. She played in 19 events for the Cowgirls and earned a spot on the 1998 All-Big 12 Tournament team.
Without Marshall's determination and courage, Oklahoma State women's golf would not be where it is today.
"She did some really great things in her time here," Greag Robertson said. "With golf being such a global sport, it's great to see people of all races and backgrounds being involved."
