Former McDonald's All-American, Kansas Standout Thompson Signs With Cowboy Basketball
May 18, 2021 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton announced the signing of 2020 McDonald's All-American and former Kansas standout Bryce Thompson.
The unanimous five-star talent finished his time at Tulsa's Booker T. Washington High School as the nation's No. 19 recruit according to Rivals. 247Sports listed him as the No. 4 combo guard in the country and assigned him a grade of 0.9923, which makes him the seventh-highest rated OSU signee in the recruiting rankings era (since 2003).
Thompson made an immediate impact at Kansas, which was 16-4 in games he played in. He opened the year with a 12-point performance against the eventual national runner-up, Gonzaga. Despite missing 10 games due to injury, Thompson also scored 11 points against Texas and Washburn and ended the year by starting his final three games.
"We are thrilled to have Bryce join the Oklahoma State basketball family," Boynton said. "I've known him and his family for several years and have watched him grow through pure hard work and determination to become his best. I look forward to seeing him make an immediate impact on Cowboy basketball and I know his work ethic and drive will fit well within our program. His scoring and playmaking ability will provide a great offensive boost to our backcourt."
Thompson was named the Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Player of the Year following his junior and senior seasons, and he won the 2019 6A state championship. In 2020, Thompson helped No. 1 Booker T. Washington advance to the Oklahoma 6A state semifinals before the season was canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
A do-it-all guard, Thompson averaged 19.6 points, 5.2 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game as a junior, but was able to improve those averages to 24.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists as a senior. He finished his career with 1,945 points, 429 rebounds, 334 assists, 263 3-pointers, 102 steals and a scoring average of 17.8 points per game.
Thompson was the unanimous choice for Oklahoma high school player of the year following his senior season. The Oklahoman named him the 2020 Super 5 Player of the Year, which makes him the fifth Cowboy signee since 2018 to earn a spot on the Super 5 roster.
The Tulsa World also named him the Oklahoma Player of the Year and one of their Tulsans of the Year. The Oklahoma Coaches Association named him to the 2020 All-State game's East roster.
Those accolades made him just the fourth player from Tulsa in 43 years to earn a roster spot in the McDonald's All-America game, joining Wayman Tisdale (1982), Lee Mayberry (1988) and Ryan Humphrey (1997).
He is the ninth Cowboy signee to be named a McDonald's All-American, and the second of the Boynton era alongside 2021 Consensus All-American Cade Cunningham.
Boynton has now signed two five-star recruits and eight four-star recruits since November 2018. Thompson is the third addition to the OSU roster this offseason, joining Syracuse transfer Woody Newton and Texas Tech transfer Tyreek Smith.
