Smeeton Runs No. 5 Steeplechase Time in Country
March 30, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER— Ryan Smeeton ran one of the nation's best times in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to highlight a busy Friday for the Oklahoma State men's and women's track and field teams.
Smeeton threw down a run that catapulted him toward the top of the country's performance list in his race at the Stanford Invitational. Smeeton clocked in with a time of 8:41.26. His heat-winning time ranks fifth in the country and would have been sixth in 2018 as well.
The Canadian Cowboy's steeplechase race was a personal best. Smeeton shattered his previous PR, beating out his old time by nearly 13 seconds.
Hassan Abdi returned to a long distance race and he finished 17th in the invitational 10,000 meters. He crossed the line with a time of 29:13.95. His performance would have been a qualifying time for the West Regional during the 2018 outdoor season.
In Austin, the men's 4X400-meter relay team of LaKyron Mays, Ashton Hicks, Tanner Green and Justin Long finished fifth in the qualifying races. The squad's time of 3:10.48 was good enough to earn them a berth in the final race at the Texas Relays.
Aaliyah Birmingham finished seventh in the prelims of the women's 100 meters. Her time of 11.55 qualified her for the final race on Saturday. Birmingham's time would have been the school's third-best personal best, but the mark was not wind-legal, so it doesn't count in the record books.
Baylor Nelson set a personal best in the hammer throw at the ORU Invitational in Tulsa. She tossed the hammer 49.48m/162-4 and beat her old personal best by 19 centimeters. The performance marked Nelson's second victory in the hammer throw this season as she won the event at the Arkansas Spring Invitational last weekend.
