OSU Track and Field Earns 11 Top-Five Performances to Close Weekend
March 30, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER— The Oklahoma State men's and women's track and field teams picked up 11 top-five performances including two victories across three meets on Saturday.
The Cowboys' 4X400-meter relay team finished fourth at the Texas Relays. Justin Long anchored the final leg of the relay in 45.86 to help OSU finish in 3:08.97. The Cowboys' time would have been a top-50 time in the West Region in 2018.
Aaliyah Birmingham finished sixth in the women's 100 meters, running a time of 11.48. Her time was a .07-second improvement from her qualifying time Friday. Birmingham hasn't run a wind-legal time yet this season, but she is primed to put her name toward the top of OSU's performance list when she does.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls picked up five top-20 performances in loaded fields at the Stanfor Invitational.
Juan Diego Castro and Garrett Calhoun finished 12th and 13th in the men's 800 meters. Castro's time is a collegiate best as he finished with a time of 1:51.13 in his second career race. Calhoun's time of 1:51.27 is a new personal best, beating out any performance in either the indoor or outdoor seasons.
Molly Sughroue, Jennifer Martinez and Ariane Ballner finished 14th through 16th on the women's 800 meters. All three ran 2:09.06 or better, which is traditionally close to the cutoff for qualification. During the 2018 outdoor season, the last time to make it to the West Regional was 2:08.01.
The Cowgirls picked up two victories at the ORU Invitational. Schuyler Wood-Hilderbrandt won the long jump and Ryan Roane won the triple jump.
Wood-Hilderbrandt picked up her second win in as many tries. She won with a mark of 5.96m/19-6.75, which is a 32-centimeter improvement from last weekend.
Roane won her first triple jump of the season with a mark of 12.33m/40-5.5. Roane's performance was better than any triple jump performance she had during the 2018 outdoor season.
The track and field teams return to action on Saturday at the Jim Click Invitational in Tuscon, Arizona.
