Track and Field Claims Six Victories in Season Opener
March 23, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— Six victorious performances highlighted the Oklahoma State men's and women's track and field teams' efforts at the Arkansas Spring Invitational on Saturday.
Hassan Abdi, Garrett Calhoun, Juan Diego Castro, Blake Scott, Schuyler Wood-Hilderbrandt and Jennifer Martinez won their respective events despite wet and windy conditions at John McDonnell Field.
Abdi made his return in a Cowboy uniform after sitting out the cross country and indoor seasons due to exhausted eligibility. He won the 1,500 meters invitational section with a time of 3:51.38. Abdi's time set a personal best and was nearly a 10-second improvement.
Calhoun and Castro won their respective sections of the 800 meters. Calhoun's time ranks second-best among his career performances in the outdoor 800 meters. Castro is a true freshman and made his outdoor collegiate debut.
Scott won the pole vault, clearing 4.95m/16-2.75 for the victory. Scott finished the 2018 outdoor season as a second-team All-American and didn't clear 4.95m/16-2.75 that season until the fifth week of competition.
Wood-Hilderbrandt claimed the Cowgirls' lone field victory of the day. She won the women's long jump with a mark of 5.64m/18-6. Wood-Hilderbrandt was an All-Big 12 long jumper during the 2018 indoor season and is hoping to do so this year.
Martinez completed the sweep of the 800 meter invitational sections, winning the race with a time of 2:11.09. Martinez is entering her final collegiate season.
The track was wet and the wind was gusting, but assistant coach Josh Langley said he thought OSU did a good job of competing.
"When you get these kind of conditions, you have to switch your mindset from going out and trying to have personal best performances to going out and just trying to compete hard and beat the person next to you," Langley said. "I thought in a lot of our events we did a great job of that."
The Cowboys and Cowgirls head to three separate meets next weekend. The Texas Relays begin Wednesday and the ORU and Stanford Invitationals kick off Friday.
