Johnson, Rodriguez Run Top-Five Mile Performances
January 26, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER—Sinclaire Johnson followed up her distance medley relay anchor leg with an excellent performance and Isai Rodriguez opened his season with a top-five finish in the mile for the Oklahoma State track and field teams.
At the UW Invitational in Seattle, Johnson ran a 4:35.62 to take second overall in a stacked field, beating out the likes of All-Americans Allie Ostrander and Katie Rainsberger. Johnson finished runner-up to only professional athlete Hanna Green of the Oregon Track Club.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Dave Smith said he thought it was a great race for Johnson after a short turnaround.
"I think it was a great race for her," Smith said. "It's hard to come back after last night, which had a lot of emotional output, but I thought she competed well. I think she set out to be the best collegiate girl and she was."
Johnson's time comes in at No. 3 in OSU history, behind only national champions Kaela Edwards and Natalja Piliusina.
At the Razorback Invitational in Arkansas, Rodriguez opened his season in the Mile and finished in third place with a time of 4:05.64. He finished behind Oregon's Cooper Teare and Arkansas' Cameron Griffith, who both ran sub-4 minute miles.
Rodriguez's time also shaves five seconds off of his previous personal best in the event.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team won the event in a time of 3:13.30. The time sets a season best mark for the Cowboys, beating their previous best mark by about six seconds.
Ashton Hicks and LaKyron Mays both ran their first collegiate 400 meters and both earned top-10 finishes. Hicks finished the race in 47.33 and Mays ran 400 meters in 48.15.
Assistant coach Cody Halsey said she was pleased with how OSU competed.
"There were multiple personal bests and lots of gritty performances," Halsey said. "I was really impressed with our young athletes. They did some big things fairly early in the season, which is always great to see."
