Postgame Quotes: OSU vs. Baylor
January 14, 2019 | Cowboy Basketball
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton
Opening Statement:
"Very frustrating night. It's a frustrating part of the process. You get some momentum and your messaging doesn't resonate as strong because you have other voices start creeping in and start telling them things that make them feel good. We deserve to feel good about what we did on Saturday, but we obviously played like we haven't put that game behind us. Give credit to Baylor, they played a great game and made tons of shots. It's a lesson for us that we have to play every 40 minute game in its own entity and we can't expect to have momentum [from the previous game]. It's not a real thing, it doesn't help you on the court. You have to play the game that you are in and be focused in that regard and we weren't tonight."
On Baylor's zone defense
"It just made us stand around. We didn't get the same ball movement that we had gotten against them in man-to-man. We didn't drive the ball aggressively and we started to settle. We were settling for taking really deep threes, really for no reason and that was obviously really frustrating for me."
On Isaac Likekele
"He never got into rhythm and it's a great example of how this thing can be a roller coaster for him. You have a great game and your highlights are on TV and your friends are telling you that you are great. I'm trying to tell him: 'Hey, it's just one game. I expect you to play that way all the time, you are capable of it but it's got to be with the right mindset.' I'm confident in him that he will be able to bounce back and play well again the next time out."
Cowboy junior Cameron McGriff
On OSU's defense:
"We had some lapses early that let them get the lead. The Big 12 has players that are really good and once they get going, they're hard to slow down."
On the last seven minutes of the game:
"We hurt ourselves by not getting into a flow on offense. We took a lot of time after we crossed half court. They switched up between man and zone, and made it tough. At the end of the day, we have to hold ourselves accountable and figure it out."
On the difficulty of playing in the Big 12:
"If we don't have it figured out by now, it's not going to get any easier. This league is the most competitive in the country. We're getting it through our head that these games come down to two possessions in every game, on the road or at home. It's hard to win. As soon as you get complacent, another team will come in and knock you off. You can't take a night off in this league."
Cowboy sophomore Curtis Jones
On facing Baylor:
"We knew what we were up against. We were really focused in practice and scouting. Once guys get hot (in the game) though, it's hard to stop." (Baylor is) tough. I do think we were prepared. It was a quick turnaround, but, at times, we had lapses. We played good at some points, but they brought the fight to us a couple times."
On what the team needs to do to improve:
"We have to control the glass. That's something we have to keep getting better at. We've got to stay locked in, playing game by game locked in and focused. Coach says we can do our thing and over time we'll continue to grow and get better in (close games)."
On his mindset:
"I was just trying to be aggressive. I want to help the team any way I can. I've been working at it."
Baylor head coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement:
"First off I thought it was a great game. Normally after emotional games on Saturday, and it was a big win for Oklahoma State and it was a tough loss for us, and normally you don't shoot well and you don't use quick turn arounds with emotions like that. Both teams either didn't guard anybody or we're on fire, and I think it was on fire. King McClure obviously had a special game for us. As a coach you love when your seniors get to have a chance to, he had been struggling and spending a lot of time in the gym, and you love it when their hard work pays off. Credit to two teams were really battling, typical Big 12 game, it can go anyway. Who makes a couple free throws and who makes a shot."
Baylor's King McClure
On his performance tonight:
"It was really just credit to my teammates. They started looking for me. That's one thing about our group of guys, we really aren't selfish. It's amazing what you can do when you got a bunch of guys behind you cheering you on and excited when you're making plays. They were looking for me and just credit to them for getting me the ball when I was hot so really credit to them."
