Cowgirls Fall Short in Season Opener to Duke
January 12, 2019 | Cowgirl Tennis
NASSAU, Bahamas –Oklahoma State's ninth-ranked women's tennis team fell to No. 4 Duke, 5-2, on Sunday at Windsor Academy in the first international tennis dual in NCAA history.
"I am really proud of the way our girls competed today. Our seniors led the way, and our new Cowgirls all competed well," coach Chris Young said. "Duke is a very talented team and one of the best in the country this year, so it was a great first match for both of us. Just a few points made the difference, and they were able to win some big points at the right time."
The day started with Duke (1-0) taking the doubles point. OSU's tandem of Tamara Arnold and Bunyawi Thamchiwat defeated Kelly Chen and Meible Chi, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Duos Sofia Blanco and Lisa Marie Rioux and Marina Guinart and Catherine Gulihur both fell, 6-4, at the No. 1 and 2 slots, respectively.
The Cowgirls (0-1) took two singles matches with Guinart and Blanco both coming away with wins. Guinart defeated Margaryta Bilokin, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 4 position. At No. 5 singles, Blanco took down Kaitlyn McCarthy, 6-2, 6-2.
Duke picked up wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 6 before the final match at No. 3 coming down to a tiebreaker with Cowgirl Katie Stresnakova, who fell to Kelly Chen to secure the final point.
"I thought it was a great atmosphere to compete in," Young said. "We have the best fans in the nation, and they gave us a home court advantage even here in the Bahamas. We will grow from this match, and I am really excited about the potential of this group."
The Cowgirls will be back on the court January 19th against Tulsa.
