Shippy Sets OSU Runs Record in Midweek Defeat
April 18, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
Sydney Pennington drove home Shippy with a sacrifice fly to right field that made it a 5-2 ballgame. Shippy's run was her 59th of the season, surpassing her own OSU single-season record that she previously set as a sophomore in 2016.
Behind Shippy's record-setting run, OSU (32-13; 10-2 Big 12) scored six runs in total Wednesday. Five of those runs were driven in by Taylor Lynch, marking the fifth time this season that she has driven in at least three runs and the third time she has driven in five.
"They're just veterans that continue to pound out hits and good at-bats," head coach Kenny Gajewski said of Shippy and Lynch. "I didn't know Lynch had five runs batted in, but I knew she had a good day. Today's is just how things go sometimes when you play a 56-game season."
Wichita State's offense was up to the task as well though, as the Shockers put up seven runs across the first three innings to take control of the contest. Most of WSU's damage came in a four-run second inning, where the Shockers racked up two runs on a two-out triple down the right-field line and then followed it with a two-run home run immediately after.
"The bottom line is that we just didn't pitch very well today," Gajewski said. "These types of days have been few and far between for us this year and it's just one of those things that you have to deal with. I thought we swung the bats well and had good at-bats. We hit a couple balls off the screws that got caught up in the wind. Credit them though. They found a way to really hit some balls hard and to keep them below the wind."
The Cowgirls tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth when Taylor Lynch doubled to right-center field, scoring Maddi Holcomb and Vanessa Shippy. That was it for the OSU offense though, as the Cowgirls left Lynch stranded in the sixth and a pair of runners in the seventh.
Oklahoma State will look to shake off the midweek loss with a three-game series at Texas this weekend. First pitch on Friday is currently scheduled for 4 p.m. on the Longhorn Network.
