Track and Field Takes Five Events in Trip to Fayetteville
April 14, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Oklahoma State track and field program earned five event titles in a windy weekend on John McDonnell Field at the aptly-named John McDonnell Invitational.
Senior Cole Verble kicked off the meet for Dave Smith's squads, taking home the first decathlon title of the outdoor season for the Cowboys, earning 4,935 points. Verble hasn't competed since the 2017 indoor season, in which he narrowly missed out on All-Big 12 honors in the heptathlon, taking ninth with a personal best 4,956 points.
In the individual events, senior Molly Sughroue took gold in a heated women's 800m invitational section, running the race in 2:07.83. With former Cowgirl Clara Nichols on rabbit duty, Sughroue paced the field from 400 meters out, outrunning Carina Viljoen of Arkansas.
Eugene Grayson earned gold in the open section of the men's 800 meters, while being the only athlete to crack sub-2 minutes in the race. His time of 1:59.50 edged out Luke Moran of Tulsa by nearly a full second.
Distance standout Bryce Quigley continued to impress in his freshman year, taking first in the men's 3,000 meters in 8:33.81. Quigley has now placed in the top-five in all three races he's competed in in the outdoor season.
Calahan Newsome ran a season best in the 400-meter hurdles, taking fourth in the event in 53.42.
Torrey Hickel continued to shine in the throws, setting a personal-best mark in the men's shot put, launching the shot 16.43m/53-11.
The women's 4x400-meter relay quartet wrapped up the event, as it competed alone and ran the relay in 3:55.36.
The Pokes take on another packed weekend trifecta next week in Norman, Waco, Texas and Palo Alto, California in search of regional-qualifying marks.
