Track and Field Shines in Outdoor Season Opener
March 17, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
TULSA, Okla. — The Oklahoma State track and field program kicked off its outdoor season this weekend, as the Pokes earned six event wins at the Tulsa Duels.
"Overall, the meet was a chance for some of our athletes to open up the year in their true events," assistant coach Josh Langley said. "For others, it was a chance to get back into the rhythm of competition."
In the men's 2,000-meter steeplechase, Christian Liddell kicked off the 2018 outdoor season with a victory in 6:08.67. In last year's outdoor season, Liddell earned All-Big 12 honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Freshman Cheyenne Walden began her first outdoor season in an OSU uniform with a win in the women's 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:02.64. Teammate Kami Hankins also took second in 7:20.58.
Schuyler Wood-Hilderbrandt picked up where she left off the indoor season, taking first in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.80m. Wood-Hilderbrandt leapt into the record books in the indoor season, taking hold of No. 2 on the OSU all-time list in the long jump.
Freshman Torrey Hickel took first in the men's shot put, launching the shot 11.99m, earning his first outdoor win as a Cowboy.
Another newcomer earning his first outdoor victory in a Cowboy uniform, Joshua Anadu took first in the men's triple jump with his mark of 14.07m.
Sophomore Wesley Hallof earned gold in his premiere event, the javelin throw, with a distance of 51.26m. Hallof narrowly missed out on earning All-Big 12 honors in the event a season ago.
Elliett Kulkin vaulted her way into the program records with her second-place finish in the women's pole vault. Her new outdoor personal record of 3.75m puts her in a tie for the school record in the event, set by Megan Robbins at the Texas Relays in 1999.
"I know she wishes she could have a couple more attempts at that last bar," Langley said. "But to come into her hometown and get an outdoor PR and tie the school record in her first outdoor meet is a great start."
Kulkin set the OSU record in the indoor season in the pole vault, launching her way to a clearance of 3.85m/12-7.5 in the final regular-season meet in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Newcomer Emily Rogers continued to leave her mark in her debut season with the Cowgirls, moving up to No. 9 on the OSU all-time outdoor list with her height of 1.64m in the women's high jump. Rogers is coming off a successful indoor season that saw her take control of No. 2 in the OSU record books in the indoor high jump.
In the women's 4x400-meter relay, the quartet of Nicolette Dixon, Amira Coleman, Danielle Coleman and Sarah Horan ran their way onto the outdoor OSU all-time list, running the relay in 3:45.64. The time was good enough for No. 6 in school history and second in the event.
The Pokes return to action next weekend at the Arkansas Spring Invitational on March 24. At last season's meet, Dave Smith's squads took home four event titles, highlighted by two from Ieva Zarankaite.
