Home Run Barrage Powers Cowgirls Past Western Michigan
February 11, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 24/21 Oklahoma State softball team continued to roll in its Kajikawa Classic finale, as the Cowgirls launched four home runs to overpower Western Michigan, 21-5, on Sunday.
The Cowgirls' 21 runs scored ties the program record for runs scored in a game, and it is the third time they have hit that mark since the start of last season. OSU (4-1) also scored in the first inning for the fourth-straight game Sunday thanks to a pair of two-run home runs from Vanessa Shippy and Jessi Haffner.
"It's obviously a great day when you score 21 runs and hit the way that we hit," OSU head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Really the way we hit all weekend is exciting for us. Our team was ready and they showed that. We're excited to see what the next weekend holds now."
Over five games this weekend, Shippy showcased why she has been an All-American in each of the past two seasons, as she was nearly impossible for opposing teams to get out.
Shippy finished 11-for-13 at the plate and drew five walks. She also launched two home runs, scored nine times and drove in six runs.
"Shippy is just who she is and she just continues to play well," Gajewski said. "This is the first time in my three years that she's gotten off to a good start, so it's exciting to see where she goes."
The home-run barrage from OSU continued in the third inning when Sydney Pennington launched the first pitch of the frame over the wall in left-center field.
It was the first home run for Pennington, who Gajewski has described previously as having "wacky" power. The freshman had an impressive first weekend of college softball, going 10-for-20 and driving in a team-high runs from the cleanup spot.
"Pennington is a kid that we put a lot of pressure on because we knew she was going to be good," Gajewski said. "She obviously exceeded expectations, but it's also good for her to hit behind Shippy and in front of Montgomery. That was in the plan because we've got kids that can help protect her."
OSU continued to pour on the runs in the third inning, as Randee O'Donnell blasted a three-run shot over the left field wall. It was O'Donnell's 11th career home run Oklahoma State and she is now tied for 18th in team history in that category.
The Cowgirls finished the Kajikawa Classic with 12 home runs in five games played.
Madi Sue Montgomery capped off the top of the third inning with an RBI single up the middle, as the Pokes batted around and logged eight runs in the frame.
OSU tacked on nine more runs in the top of the fifth to secure the 21-5 victory.
In the circle, Emmie Robertson dealt once again. She followed up a complete-game performance against No. 7/7 Arizona on Friday by giving up just one hit over three innings of shutout work. Roberston also earned the victory, improving her to 2-0 in her brief Cowgirl career.
Kendal Judge handled the final two frames in the circle. She struck out two batters in her debut as a Cowgirl.
Oklahoma State will return to action next week in Clearwater, Florida, as they take part in the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Foundation Invitational. The Cowgirls will square off with Tennessee and Florida Atlantic on Thursday in the Sunshine State.
