OSU Track and Field Sets NCAA Top-10 Marks on Loaded Weekend
February 10, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER — Hassan Abdi and Kaylee Dodd set NCAA top-10 marks on what proved to be the busiest weekend of the indoor season for the Oklahoma State track and field team.
"We had a really good weekend," head coach Dave Smith said. "We got some national qualifiers out of it and some really big PR's."
On the West coast in the Husky Classic, Abdi continued to impress when he ran a 13:41.91 in a packed 5,000m field. His time earned him third overall in the competition and No. 3 on OSU's all-time top-10 list.
As of now, Abdi's time vaults him to second in the NCAA in the men's 5,000m.
"Hassan ran a big time race," Smith said. "He showed that grittiness and toughness that he always does."
Dodd picked up where she left off last season, running the 800 meters in 2:04.52, taking first in a loaded field at the Iowa State Classic. That improves her No. 4 all-time mark by 0.16 on the OSU women's all-time 800-meter list.
With that time, Dodd currently sits at No. 9 in the country in the women's 800m.
"Kaylee also won a loaded race with a lot of NCAA talent," Smith said. "It wasn't the time she had hoped for, but she beat a lot of top people in the NCAA and she's coming around nicely."
In Seattle, Matthew Fayers ran the first sub-4 mile of the season for the Pokes, running it in 3:58.44, albeit taking eighth overall. Nine athletes ran sub-4 miles in the race.
British international Jacob Fincham-Dukes improved on his season-best long jump, leaping 7.77m/25-6 to take second at the Don Kirby Invitational in New Mexico. His jump slots him at No. 16 in the nation in the men's long jump.
Senior Molly Sughroue took sixth in a loaded Husky Classic mile field, running her mile in 4:37.74. Her time remains the No. 7 women's mile time in OSU history.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Danielle Coleman, Stephanie Ferrante, Ariane Ballner and Ambra Wesley took fifth in Seattle, running a time of 3:49.51. That time is the second-best by a Cowgirl relay team this season and slots them at No. 10 on the OSU all-time list.
Closer to home in the Fayetteville, Arkansas, freshman Nicolette Dixon made her mark on OSU record books by outkicking the competition in her 400m heat. Her time of 56.06 also puts her at No. 3 on the school's top-10 list.
Dave Smith's squads get little time to rest as next weekend are the last regular-season meets before the Big 12 Championships in Ames, Iowa. The teams will head back to Arkansas, Kansas and Indiana looking to qualify for this year's NCAA Championships.
"We've put in a lot of hard work and you can see it's finally starting to pay off," Smith said.
