Mocco and Martin Named Members of 2019 Glen Brand Hall of Fame Class
November 07, 2018 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Former Cowboy wrestler Steve Mocco will be inducted into the Glen Brand Hall of Fame Class in June 2019, the Dan Gable Museum announced Tuesday. Dave Martin, longtime Oklahoma State deputy athletic director, will be inducted with the class of 2019 as well.
The Glen Brand Hall of Fame was established as a wing in the Dan Gable Museum in 2002 to honor individuals who have made an impact on the sport at a national level or who have done extraordinary work in the state of Iowa. The hall recognizes native-born Iowans and those who achieved their fame while wrestling or coaching for an Iowa school.
Mocco was a four-time NCAA finalist and won two NCAA titles in his collegiate wrestling career. He competed for John Smith and the Cowboys in 2005 and 2006. The Hodge Trophy winner was a two-time Big 12 champion for the Poke. Following his time on the wrestling team, he joined Cowboy football for the 2006 season before returning to training for the 2008 Olympic team, where he competed at 120 kg.
At Iowa State, Martin was an NCAA Champion in 1970 and an NCAA runner-up in 1969 at 158 pounds.
A staple in the OSU Athletic Department for 34 years, Martin announced his retirement in spring of 2017. He served as deputy athletic director, twice as interim athletic director and, in 1992, interim coach for Cowboy wrestling, leading the team to a Big Eight title. From April of 1998 to January the following year, Martin served as interim Big 12 commissioner.
Martin made other contributions to wrestling when he served for eight years on the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee, including six as chair. During that time, Martin also held a position on the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Board of Governors.
The museum will hold a banquet to honor inductees at the Prairie Links Golf & Event Center in Waverly on June 7, 2019.
