Postgame Quotes: Oklahoma State vs Ouachita Baptist
Cowboy basketball head coach Mike Boynton
Thoughts on the game
"Overall, I was very pleased with our effort. We tried to focus on our game plan, so for a young team doing this for the first time in front of people, there is a lot of positive things to take away there. But we can't hide from the fact that we had 21 turnovers, and we fouled unnecessarily several other times, so we have a lot to learn and tomorrow we'll use the opportunity to come and watch the film and build on this."
Regarding the tone of the gameÂ
"We wanted to be aggressive. We wanted to take the edge off and score a basket rather quickly so the fans could sit down; I'm sure they appreciated that as well. It was good to get off to a good start, and these guys could feel good about what they were doing."
Regarding impacting the team in ways other than scoring
"It is hard for young guys to really understand that you can impact your team winning without necessarily scoring a basket in the game. Cam was a great example of that. His shot wasn't falling from the outside and he had several turnovers in the first half, which is uncharacteristic. He didn't let that bog him down psychologically. He found other ways to contribute to the game positively."
Junior forward Cameron McGriffÂ
Trip to Europe preparing younger playersÂ
"They definitely had an idea of what we needed from their standpoint to come out and perform. I think they were excited to play in front of the fans in Stillwater."Â
Difference between first and second half
"I fell on the sideline on one play. A little coffee fell on me -- that's all. I got a little caffeine in me. No, but I just checked in with myself. Just try to impact the game on the glass and I knew that the points would come."
Being on the court with Waters and Dziagwa
"Sometimes we get out of hand if one of us aren't in the game at the moment. After a while freshman will get the hang of it. In a perfect world, we'd want to play everybody just as much"
Freshman guard Isaac Likekele
Playing in GIA
"It felt great. A lot of the fans came out. There was a lot of love. At first, I was really kind of nervous, but the more I went out there to play I started to feel really different. It was a great experience."Â
Looking into the season after today
"It's just a confidence booster. At the same time, the veterans, the captains and Coach Boynton they always expect us to get better and do more. I can't really dwell on this game and what I did. I just have to practice hard and move on to the next game."Â Â
Getting out of rough patch during practicesÂ
"The practice part -- all I can do is keep focusing and just get better by watching film. It's really just been a mental thing. It gets tough, and it's just an experience I have to go through as a freshman. There will be more rough patches but this time I know what to do. Just have to continue to get better."Â
Ouachita Baptist coach Dennis Nutt
On his first impression of Oklahoma State
"They are very young, and I think once they get their full arsenal back on the team I think they will be pretty good. They will be really good in this league, but I know he (Coach Boynton) is probably needing a few more guards out there, I know he is really shorthanded right now with those guys being out. They are big, they're physical. We were just kind of happy to take what we could get tonight."
On his connection to Oklahoma State
"My dad played for Hank Iba in the fifties, my mom went to school here and they both graduated from here. I got two older brothers Houston played football and basketball here, and Dickey he spent four years on the men's basketball team. I used to come here a lot and have played a lot of games on that floor."
