Postgame Quotes: Oklahoma State vs UTSA
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton
Regarding the game:
"I have to give credit to one of our freshman for really being a spark; Duncan Demuth came in and played with incredible energy and really lit a fire in the rest of his teammates and they fed off of him to get some deflections and stops and rebounds, which gave us a chance to do what we do best- score in transition and play in attack mode."
Regarding Demuth diving on the floor and getting a jump ball:
"He loved it and so did his teammates. That's who he is. I told this in a media session the other day, and I don't want to put him in Mitchell Solomon area yet, but in a few more years, people will think Mitchell Solomon stuck around for a few more years. Just the way he plays- he's very reliable. He gives everything he can every single night. He'll be one of the beloved by the Cowboys."
Regarding Dziagwa:
"Dziagwa has been shooting it well. His work from the summer is paying off, and we need him to make shots for us. He brings a different dimension we don't have, and so it's encouraging to see some of that work pay off. Cam McGriff was big on glass, and Lindy has been steady all along."
Regarding the early timeout:
"It was mostly to the freshman and the message was you're out here playing. There is no classification on the court. You go out there and compete and try to execute the game plan as much as possible."
Regarding Trey Reeves:
"I'm proud for that kid to know how much he is appreciated for the work he has done and who he is as a person and how he represents the program. The legacy of his dad, him earning that scholarship, we probably owe his dad another one for all he did for this program."
Senior forward Cameron McGriff
On the 9-0 hole and what Coach Boynton said in the timeout:
"He lit a fire in us. He prepared us for the rest of the game. We came out really flat."
On the team's slow start against the Roadrunners:
"I'm not sure. You've got to give credit to UTSA, they had a gameplan. We weren't ready for it. They ran the same play back-to-back, same play twice. We had to make an adjustment, but we weren't worried on the court."
On what the team tried to improve against UTSA:
"Finishing the game strong. We kind of flipped both games. We started off really well in Charlotte, then we came here and we started off flat, but we finished the game strong."
On being on the floor with four freshmen during the game:
"I treat these guys like family, these guys work really hard, at this point they're not going to be treated like freshmen."
On the comparison of Duncan Demuth and Mitchell Solomon:
"I definitely see that. A few inches shorter, but I see it."
On where the team gets its energy:
"We're not the most talented group of guys. We have talent, but at the end of the day we have to play harder than the other team. That's where we get most of our energy from."
On his mindset during the game:
"I just try to let the game flow to me. It's getting a ball on the offensive rebound or on the glass. If I find an open look, I'm going to take it. I've been working really hard on that."
On getting his first career double-double:
"It feels good. I wish I could have gotten that tenth rebound in those other games, but it feels good."
On the return of teammate Michael Weathers:
"It was great. It was fun to see him on the court. I know he's excited, he hasn't played in so long. I am so excited for him."
Freshman forward Duncan Demuth
On playing his first home game at Oklahoma State:
"It's a dream come true. I've dreamed about this since I was a little kid. To get the opportunity to do this is amazing. I love it."
On the comparison of himself and Mitchell Solomon:
"It's a great honor. I watched a lot of games and Mitch was a special player. It's an honor to be in the same words and sentence as Mitch."
On being named Coach Boynton's game MVP:
"It's an honor. I just go out there and try to play as hard as I can and give everything I can for the team, so we can get an opportunity to win the game. I'm just blessed to be here and just thankful."
On the adjustment from high school to college:
"The pace of the game is so much faster. In high school, everything is so slow. I remember in summer practices, everything was so quick. When we went to Europe it was quick. It's really just been adjusting to the speed of the game. I have felt like all of the freshmen have done a good job adjusting to the speed of the game."
UTSA head coach Steve Henson
On the game overall...
"It was kinda the opposite of the other night, this game we started terrific, we attacked and made good plays to start the game. We defended pretty well early on. There was another one of those runs where we couldn't get a whistle to even stop it. We needed a media timeout and we couldn't get there and we just had too many weak plays. They were more physical, which we were concerned about."
On the second half of the game...
"It was very choppy...it was hard to get a flow, it was hard to make a run. We didn't defend well enough in the second half to give ourselves a chance. They made shots, three-pointers, throughout the game. They have a couple terrific three-point shooters, a couple of other guys made some, so we have to take care of that. Their zone bothered us which surprised us a little bit that we had that much trouble against their zone and we didn't drive the gaps. We didn't drive the gaps with the dribble or the gaps so that was a big stretch the first half when they went zone."
