Cowgirl Streaks Snapped In Series Loss To Baylor
April 28, 2017 | Cowgirl Softball
WACO, Texas ---- Oklahoma State softball dropped its first Big 12 series of 2017 with a pair of losses to No. 13 Baylor Friday night at Getterman Stadium. The Cowgirls dropped the first game, 5-1, before falling in the second, 7-3.
Â
Taylor Lynch extended her team-high hitting streak to 10 games in the first game before it was snapped in the second. The losses moved the Cowgirls into a tie for second with Baylor in the Big 12 standings with four games remaining.
Â
The series loss snapped a four-game Big 12 series-winning streak.
Â
"We're at that point where it's time for our kids to take that next step," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "That's the message I gave them. We're just as good as this team here. We just have to play like it and believe it. It's great to be in these games when it counts but you've got to win them. That's our next deal. We've got to figure out a way to win these games."
Â
Oklahoma State (32-19 Overall, 11-3 Big 12) battled in the opener and was in the game until the end. The Cowgirls didn't go down without a fight after Baylor jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Â
The Cowgirls looked to cut into the deficit in the top of the third when Lynch singled moving Rylee Bayless to second with two outs. Vanessa Shippy doubled to the wall in right scoring Bayless and making it 3-1. Â Lynch looked to have scored on the play before Shippy was thrown out at third. The home plate umpire ruled that the out at third occurred prior to Lynch crossing the plate.Â
Â
Baylor (39, 9, 11-3) added runs in the bottom of fourth and fifth to extend its lead to the 5-1 advantage it wouldn't surrender.
Â
Shippy led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lynch finished 1-for-3 to extend her hitting streak to 10 games.
Â
Brandi Needham (17-6) took the loss in the circle for the Cowgirls.
Â
The second game of the night had a similar beginning as Baylor jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one.
Â
The Bears scored five in the bottom of the third to take a 7-0 lead when Maddi Holcomb and Lynch collided in center going for a ball. Lynch was unable to finish the game.
Â
Oklahoma State looked to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh when Hayleigh Galvan walked with bases loaded and no outs cut the deficit to 7-1. Shippy followed it up with an RBI single to make it 7-2, Bears. Jessi Haffner was later hit by the pitch with one out to cut it to 7-3.Â
Â
Shea Coats (6-8) took the loss for the Cowgirls in 2.1 innings of action.
Â
Madi Sue Montgomery led the way at the plate going 2-for-3.
