Meet Format/Schedule - All Times CT
The 2017 DeLoss Dodds Invitational is a two-day meet beginning Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. with women's pentathlon events, and concluding Jan. 21 after the final heat of the men's 4X400-meter relay.
The first individual events begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, with the Erik Kynard Jr., high jump competition.
Saturday opens with the conclusion of the multievents, but the majority of the day belongs to individual events as it is the only day of the meet with individual track and field events scheduled.
The first running event will be the women's mile at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, and the track will be in use until the aforementioned 4X400-meter relay closes the competition.
Last Time Out
Kaela Edwards set a collegiate record in the 1,000-meter run with her 2:40.79 from the Holiday Inn Invite in her 2017 indoor debut.
The previous record of 2:40.82 stood for 11 months and was set last February by Villanova's Angel Piccirillo.
Oklahoma State had two impressive days at the meet in Lincoln, Nebraska, securing 11 event titles and setting personal-bests in several events.
Two of those titles came from the men and women's 60-meter dashes when sophomore Malik Givens and true freshman Kira White set PRs and ran away with the crowns.
White's 7.65 made her the second-fastest woman in school history, and Givens' 6.70 put him into the top-10 in the NCAA and left him just outside the top-two in OSU history.
Josh Thompson and Matthew Fayers competed for the first time since the NCAA Cross Country Championships when Thompson took home an All-America honor.
Thompson won the 1,000-meter run, while Fayers took second.
The Pokes swept the top-two in multiple events, but in the women's 600-meter run, the Cowgirls took all of the top-six places with Kaylee Dodd winning the race.
A Look Back - Deloss Dodds, 2016
Chase Ealey led the way for Oklahoma State and had another great showing in the Ahearn Field House during the 2016 DeLoss Dodds Invitational.
Five Cowgirls participated in the weight throw competition and three set personal bests. Ealey led the competition with her 18.36m/60-3.00 throw from her fifth attempt, which was the winning mark. It was the second time this season that Ealey set a personal best at Kansas State, and her throw put her on another Cowgirl top-10 list with the mark slotting in at fourth all-time in the women's weight throw.
In the men's 600-yard run, Ryan Wheatley made his season debut and led the Cowboy runners with a 1:13.26. He won his heat and finished third overall as one of five Pokes in the top-10. Freshmen Chance Galloway, Brayden Brock and Trenton Daniels took fifth, sixth and seventh, and All-American Brandon Singleton finished ninth.
Two-time All-American Savannah Camacho and freshman Kaytlyn Larson finished one and two in the 1,000-meter final. Camacho, who was making her season debut, ran a 2:52.78 to take the win and claim the No. 2 time in the Big 12 this season when adjusted for track size. Larson passed her season's best from over a month ago by four seconds, running a 2:53.03 and picks up the No. 4 spot in the Big 12.
OSU Squads in Preseason Top-15
The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its preseason top-25 poll for the indoor season, Monday, with the Cowboys and Cowgirls both earning nods at 14 and 11, respectively.
The Cowgirls debut at 11 is their highest preseason rank in school history and their first time in the preseason poll since 2015. The squad is the second-highest ranked team in the conference behind No. 5 Texas.
Last year the Cowgirls finished 10th at the NCAA Championships with returning champion Kaela Edwards winning the indoor mile title.
As for the rest of the Big 12, Baylor sits in 13th, Kansas State in 18th and Oklahoma has the 25 spot.
Conference indoor champions a season ago, the Cowboys slot in at No. 14 in the preliminary ranking, their highest ever position in a preseason indoor poll.
The Pokes come into the year off a cross country season that produced two All-Americans and brought OSU's conference title streak to nine-straight.
Among the Big 12, the Cowboys are the third-highest ranked squad, with Texas (seventh), Texas Tech (12th) and Oklahoma (24th) owning top-25 positions, and Baylor and Kansas State just outside in 27th and 30th.
Edwards Earns National Honor for Record-Setting Performance
Oklahoma State's Kaela Edwards received Athlete of the Week honors from the Big 12 and the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this week for her record-breaking performance in the 1,000-meter run at the Holiday Inn Invite.
Edwards was named as the Big 12's Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week as well as the USTFCCCA's Division I Female Athlete of the Week after breaking the 1,000-meter collegiate record in 2:40.79.
Along with winning the race, Edwards outran two All-Americans in teammates Chelsea Jarvis and Savannah Camacho. Jarvis, the second-place finisher, finished in 2:48.00 and Camacho's 2:49.38 got her third. Both times were personal bests and more than nine seconds better than the fourth-place finisher, putting Edwards nearly 18 seconds ahead of her closest competitor who wasn't in orange.
The previous record was set by Villanova's Angel Piccirillo in February of 2016.
The national and conference honors adds to the Cowgirl senior's already impressive trophy cabinet which includes an NCAA title for the women's mile, three first-team All-America honors, four Big 12 titles and the 2016 Indoor Female Athlete of the Year award from the USTFCCCA for the Midwest region.
This is the first Track and Field Athlete of the Week award for Oklahoma State in 2017.
Getting it Done Across the Board
It's early in 2017, but the Oklahoma State track and field teams are making waves in the Big 12 with 32 top-10 times across 12 events in the conference.
Once again, the middle distance events shoulder most of the load, claiming 25 of the 32 top-10 marks, but the team's balance this year shows through its top-five marks in the men's 60-meter dash, the men's long jump and the women's shot put.
Malik Givens' 6.70 puts the Cowboy sophomore in a tie for 10th in the NCAA in the 60-meter dash, while Jacob Fincham-Dukes' long jump best of 7.41m/24-3.75 feet has him just outside the top-20 in Division I.
In her first indoor race since 2015, Abbie Hetherington also claimed one of the best marks in the country with a 2:08.87 in the 800-meter run. She is 12th in the NCAA and second in the conference.
