Cowgirl Golf Runs Away From Field To Win Opener By 9 Strokes

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – The Oklahoma State women's golf team ran away from a field that included eight other top-30 squads to win its opening tournament of the season, the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, in near-record fashion.
After recording an opening round 14-under 274 - the second-lowest round in OSU history - the No. 9 Cowgirls closed the 54-hole showcase with a final score of 20-under 844 to win the tournament by nine strokes over No. 2 Arizona State.
The 20-under 844 is the second-best 54-hole score ever recorded by Cowgirl golf. With the victory, OSU has won five of its last seven events dating back to last season.
Linnea Johansson went 66-72-68 – 206 (-10) to demolish her previous career best 54-hole total by eight strokes. That total tied the senior for third place.
Emma Broze also notched a top-10 finish after carding rounds of 70-72-69 – 211. Her 211 and 5-under scores topped her previous career bests by three strokes.

• Oklahoma State carded rounds of 274-287-283 for a final score of 844, which is the second-best 54-hole total in program history.
• The victory is the 90th in the history Cowgirl golf, and the eighth under fourth-year head coach Courtney Jones, the 2016 Big 12 Coach of the Year.
• The Cowgirls won the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational for the first time in 23 tries dating back to 1979. OSU finished runner up on five occasions at this event, the last in 2003.
• With the victory, OSU has won its season opening tournament for the first time since 2011. This is the seventh time the Cowgirls have begun the season with a win (also in 2011-12, 2002-03, 1992-93, 1991-92, 1989-90, 1988-89, 1984-85).

• OSU led the nation in total birdies last season with 563, and they've gotten the 2016-17 season off on the right foot. OSU starters birdied 51 of the 216 holes they faced in the Dick McGuire Invitational.
