LOS ANGELES – Former Oklahoma State wrestling standout Alex Dieringer went 1-1 in day two of the 2016 World Cup, where the United States finished fourth.
Dieringer took on 2015 World silver medalist Hassan Yazdanicharati in the United States' first dual of the day against Iran. With a minute left in the first period, the Iranian struck first with a four-point move and held onto the lead through the break.
About 40 seconds into the second period, Dieringer avoided a step out, but just seconds later, Yazdanicharati executed a takedown and gut wrench to go up 8-0. He added to that with another takedown on the edge at the 4:57 mark to end the match in a 10-0 technical fall.
The nations split the dual with four matches each; however Iran won on classification points, outscoring the US, 17-15.
"Yazdanicharati's a tough opponent," Dieringer said. "He goes harder than any guy I've ever wrestled. He's a guy that you have to be prepared and ready to wrestle and I wasn't properly prepared this time. I always get more motivated after a loss so I plan to take back what I learned from that match and get better."
Dieringer finished the event in style as the team wrestled Georgia for third place. The Cowboy faced Jakob Makarashvili, ranked No. 14 in the world, in a match where he was completely dominant, despite the Georgian scoring first after Dieringer was put on the shot clock. Dieringer went on to score a takedown and a turn to go up 4-1 after the first.
He piled on the points in the second period, scoring two quick step outs to lead 6-1. Seconds later, he was awarded a crafty takedown on the edge with 90 seconds left in the match. Dieringer put an exclamation point on the win with a blast double takedown at the 5:53 mark for a 10-1 win over the World's 14th-ranked wrestler.
"He's tough and an Olympian, so I knew I had to come out and attack," Dieringer said. "I had a pretty good match and I'm excited to go out with a win like that. This is an experience that I will definitely remember and build off of."
Team USA went on to finish fourth, falling to Georgia on third criteria.
