Cowgirls Upset Baylor In Doubleheader Split
April 15, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER---- Oklahoma State softball upset No. 20 Baylor in game one of a doubleheader Friday night at Cowgirl Stadium.
The Cowgirls split the twin bill winning game one 3-1 and dropped the nightcap, 6-3.
"Take away is we beat a ranked team," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Had a chance to win the second game… I just credit (Baylor). Their kids are good."
Oklahoma State (22-18 overall, 4-5 Big 12) continued its streak of starting well in the first game, with Kacy Freeze holding Baylor scoreless the first two innings to allow the Cowgirls to have a big third.
Maddi Holcomb beat a throw at the plate on a Taylor Lynch fielder's choice to give the Cowgirls an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Madi Sue Montgomery singled through the left side of the infield a couple of batters later scoring Vanessa Shippy and Taylor Lynch giving Oklahoma State a 3-0 lead after three.
Freeze (12-6) continued pitching well late in the game, holding Baylor scoreless for the first four innings before allowing a run in the top of the fifth. She went on to hold the Bears scoreless the final two innings to secure the Cowgirls fifth-consecutive win.
The senior finished the game allowing seven hits and had two strikeouts in seven innings of work.
"I'll say it until I'm done," Freeze said. "One out at a time, one inning at a time. You've got to keep it calm and keep the pace slow. You can't let things get out of hand."
The Cowgirls found themselves down early in the second game of the doubleheader after a two-run home run in the top of the first gave the Bears an early 2-0 lead. Oklahoma State responded well with a solo home run by Red Reasnor to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second.
Oklahoma State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Darcy Taylor two-run home run. Baylor regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs to take a 4-3 lead.
Baylor (34-12, 6-4) scored one more in the top of the six and seventh to secure the 6-3 win and tie the series at 1-1. Brandi Needham (5-11) took the loss for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls had plenty of standout performances at the plate between the games. Lynch led the way in the first game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and extended her school-record hitting streak to 23 games with hits in both games. Taylor led the way in the second game, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Oklahoma State will look for its second-consecutive conference series win tomorrow against the Bears.
"(All wins) are huge," Gajewski said. "It would be huge for us because it's just doing the things we have to do. I expect us to come out here tomorrow and really play well. I don't expect anything less. These kids have been resilient all year. It would be nice."
The upset win in the first game was Oklahoma State's second win against a top-25 opponent this season.
