Cowgirl Tennis Rolls Past No. 31 New Mexico
March 07, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State's women's tennis team produced another shutout, defeating No. 31 New Mexico, 4-0, at the outdoor courts of the Greenwood Tennis Center in spectacular weather conditions on Saturday.
OSU improved to 12-2 on the season and 10-2 against ranked opponents.
"Today was good with us being able to compete outside," coach Chris Young said. "It was important for us to get that match played in outdoor conditions to help us prepare for next weekend as we start Big 12 play. It's exciting and we know that we have a very tough weekend to start it off. We'll look forward to a good week of practice. I thought today our girls were tested in some areas and that was good for us. Overall, it was a productive day and a good weekend."
The Cowgirls won their 10th doubles point of the season, taking out the Lobos on courts three and one, respectively. At the No. 3-spot, Carla Tur Mari and Maria Alvarez defeated the Dahlmans/Olivier tandem, 6-3. Finishing almost simultaneously, the nation's No. 6 duo of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente punched in a 6-2 win over New Mexico's Coone/Smith team.
Carla turned in her fourth-consecutive straight-set win, when she produced a dominating shutout over Rachana Bhat at the No. 5-spot, 6-0, 6-0.
"I think I played pretty well," Tur Mari said. "I came out with a fighting attitude. I knew I had to win the points, so I went out and just played my best. It was a good win for us, and I think the team is really excited to play Baylor next week."
A win on court one from No. 12 Viktoriya Lushkova gave the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead. Lushkova won the first set, 6-3, but fell behind early in the second, trailing 1-2. The All-American pushed back and won five-straight games to turn in a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Junior Maria Alvarez clinched the match for OSU, winning on court six over Sharon Coone in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Alvarez improved to 10-2 on the spring.
The Cowgirls return to the Greenwood Tennis Center on March 13 at 5 p.m. for a top-10 matchup, when they host No. 4 Baylor in their first conference match of the season.
