No. 10 Cowgirl Tennis Overpowers Longhorns
March 14, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State's 10th-ranked women's tennis team notched its first Big 12 win of the season over No. 54 Texas, 4-1, on Saturday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The win marked the third-straight victory for OSU over the Longhorns.
"I'm really happy with the way the girls bounced back from last night," coach Chris Young said. "We were disappointed in the way we played yesterday, but the energy level was much higher today. I'm happy with the way the girls competed. It was great that in doubles we bounced back at No. 3 to win it, and our top four girls in singles competed really well."
The Cowgirls (13-3; 1-1 Big 12) impressed to win the doubles point. At the No. 1-spot, the seventh-ranked duo of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente fell, 6-4, to the Wagland/Addison pair in a match that went back and forth.
On court two, No. 57 Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic redeemed the court one loss soon after, taking their set, 6-4, over Texas' Padegimaite and Foster team.
The doubles point was decided on court three, where Maria Alvarez and Carla Tur Mari stormed back from a 4-1 deficit, winning six of the next seven games to take down Longhorns Pippa Horn and Ratnika Batra, 7-5.
OSU stayed the course in singles, picking up wins on courts one, four and three respectively.
On one, No. 13 Lushkova went head to head with Ryann Foster. The All-American defeated the Longhorn in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to give OSU a 2-0 lead.
Adding to the team score, freshman Vladica Babic gave up only four games on court four, defeating Dani Wagland, 6-3, 6-1.
Texas earned its lone point of the day on court six as Padegimaite defeated Alvarez, 6-3, 6-4.
The remaining three courts were tightly contested as courts two and five went to three sets. On court three, Adamovic won her first set easily, 6-2. Her opponent, Batra, pushed back in the second, but the Cowgirl overcame and sealed the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win.
"Overall, I think coming back after yesterday's loss and playing against Texas like that always has something to it," Adamovic said. "I think I competed well and so did the rest of the team. I saw them all fighting and that really helped me in my performance. I feel good about the win."
OSU travels to San Diego, Calif., next week to compete against Princeton on March 21 at 11 a.m. CT.
