Cowgirls Finish Day One of National Indoor Tournament
November 12, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – Three members of the Oklahoma State women's tennis team completed the first day of competition at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday.
"I am proud of our girls for the way we competed today," coach Chris Young said. "We had three great opportunities to play some of the best players in college tennis and our girls were right there throughout."
Cowgirl Katarina Adamovic began the day in singles action, where she put on one of the most impressive performances of the day inside the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
No. 92 Adamovic defeated the tournament's top-seed, Danielle Collins (Virginia), 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
"Really proud of Katarina and her development, this year she's really stepped up," Young said. "It was a really good win against the No. 1 seed in singles."
Collins came into the tournament ranked No. 8 nationally and had not suffered a loss all season, before facing Adamovic.
Adamovic will face Jasmine Lee of Mississippi State in the second round on Friday.
In doubles, Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente defeated Jessica Aney and Kate Vialle (North Carolina), 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
"You come to a tournament like this in the fall, you want to develop your kids," Young said. "You need to play the best and find out where you're at and I thought we did that today."
The senior duo advanced to face the No. 1 seed Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr (Cal) later in the day.
Alvarez/Laurente fell in a close first set to the Golden Bears, 7-6(4). The second set again came down to a tiebreaker, which the Cowgirls took, 7-6(4). The Golden Bears captured the match in the third set, 10-7.
