Cowgirl Tennis Continues Winning Ways, Defeats Ole Miss
January 31, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The No. 16 Oklahoma State women's tennis team handily defeated No. 24 Ole Miss on Saturday, 6-1, at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
“I'm just excited about the way this team competes,” coach Chris Young said. “I'm proud of the girls. We had a couple of girls come back to win in three sets. I think our girls are just competing extremely hard, and that's what's allowing us to win these matches. If we continue to do that, we'll be in good shape.”
The excitement started when Maria Alvarez and Carla Tur Mari knocked off the No. 45 doubles duo of El Kamash and Hartono in dominating fashion, 6-1. The fifth-ranked duo of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court one.
The Cowgirls took that momentum into singles, where they won five of the day's six singles matches.
The first to wrap her match was freshman Vladica Babic, who gave up only two games en route to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mississippi's Natalie Suk.
Sophomore and 53rd-ranked Katarina Adamovic got the crowd into it as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win against Mai El Kamash on court three.
Sealing the win for the Pokes was Kelsey Laurente, who defeated 33rd-ranked Arianna Hartono in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, on court two.
The Cowgirls gave up their only point of the day on court one as No. 10 Lushkova fell to No. 20 Julia Jones.
Two Cowgirls produced huge comebacks on the day with senior Karyn Guttormsen and junior Maria Alvarez recovering from losing their first sets on courts five and six, respectively.
Alvarez posted an easy 6-0 win in her second set before taking the match with 6-3 win in the third set.
Guttormsen fought hard in the second set, saving a match point to cut Verboven's lead to 5-4. She went on to win the set 7-5, and take the match with a 10-5 super tiebreaker win in the third.
The Cowgirls have a quick turnaround as they compete against No. 41 Arkansas on Sunday at 1 p.m.
