January 24, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
ATLANTA – Oklahoma State women's tennis earned a 4-2 win over No. 29 Texas Tech in its first match at the ITA Kickoff event. The Cowgirls are now 3-0 on the season.
"I'm proud of our girls for the way we competed overall,” coach Chris Young said. “Texas Tech came out strong in both doubles and singles so I was proud of our girls for executing well on big points. Tomorrow will be another tough match but we are excited for the opportunity."
To start the match, the nation's No. 5 duo of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente handled Tech's Kilgo and Dvorak with a quick 6-2 victory on court one. The doubles point was decided with very close matches on two and three. Carla Tur Mari and Karyn Guttormsen fell, 7-6, on court three, but Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic picked up the point for the Cowgirls defeating the Frederici/Kiro team, 7-6.
Three Cowgirls picked up singles wins to ultimately clinch the win for OSU.
Finishing first was junior Maria Alvarez, who defeated Katelyn Jackson, 6-4, 6-3, on court six. The Spaniard is now 3-0 in spring competition and 14-5 on the year.
On court two, transfer Kelsey Laurente produced a huge upset over the nation's No. 35 player, Lynn Kiro, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Laurente holds a perfect 3-0 record for the spring.
“Today was a good win for us, and I'm happy that we won,” Laurente said. “The courts are really fast and I was happy that I was able to adjust quickly enough to keep the confidence on the team. We are going to be extra ready for tomorrow.”
Sealing the win for the Cowgirls was 10th-ranked Lushkova, who played in her first singles match of the spring. She went against Kenna Kilgo, who she defeated in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The Raiders picked up wins on courts three and five as No. 89 Sarah Dvorak defeated No. 53 Adamovic, 6-1, 6-4, and Sabrina Frederici beat Karyn Guttormsen, 6-0, 7-6.
Play on court four was unfinished.
The Cowgirls will play No. 18 Georgia Tech in the championship match on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
