STILLWATER -
Oklahoma State men's cross country will enter this weekend's Cowboy Jamboree as the No. 1 team in the nation, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, which was released today.
This is OSU's sixth-straight week at No. 1, dating back to last season. This is also the Cowboys' second-longest stint at the top, behind an eight-week stay at No. 1 in 2011. OSU received 11 of the possible 12 first-place votes.
According to this week's poll, the nation's top two teams will be in Stillwater on Saturday--No.1 Oklahoma State and No. 2 Northern Arizona--setting up a monster No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup at the Jamboree.
“Something like this doesn't happen very often in cross country,” OSU coach Dave Smith said. “When we make the schedule we don't know who will be ranked where, but Northern Arizona has come to the Jamboree several times in the past few years. They've beaten us here and we've beaten them. Both programs have plenty of respect for each other. We also have Michigan who is ranked at No. 28, and Furman, which is receiving votes and will surprise some people this year. The field is good all the way through, which is exciting for the sport. It's always great to have good competition early in the season.”
On the women's side, OSU is No. 22 this week, and is still the highest-ranked team in the Big 12.
OSU Cross Country will be in action this Saturday, Sept. 28, when it hosts the 76th-annual Cowboy Jamboree, in Stillwater.
