NORMAN, Okla. -
Oklahoma State's men's tennis team was defeated by 19th-ranked and third-seeded Texas, 4-0, in the first round of the Big 12 Championships on Friday, ending the Cowboys' 2013 season.
Due to forecasted inclement weather, singles were played before doubles in order to get the match in as quickly as possible. The Cowboys and Longhorns battled early, as the Cowboys won the first set on courts two, five and six.
“Early on, I thought it was a really close match, “ Head Coach Jay Udwadia said. “It was definitely a match that could've gone either way.”
After Denys Pume, Rifat Biktyakov and Matt Campbell were defeated, Chris Haworth, Richard Del Nunzio and Brady Bohrnstedt kept the Cowboys in the match by battling with the Longhorns into decisive third sets.
However, OSU was unable to break through Texas' quartet of nationally ranked singles players, as 118th-ranked Lloyd Glasspool clinched the match for the Longhorns with a victory over Haworth.
“I'm proud of the way the guys fought today,” Udwadia said. “They beat us pretty handily the first time around. For us to come back and get in the position of doing some better things against them, I'm proud of the way we competed and fought."
OSU finishes the season with a 12-14 record, its best since 2009. The squad loses senior Rifat Biktyakov, but will return six letter winners from this season.
