Cowboy Tennis Splits Contests at HEB Tournament of Champions

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team split its two matches on the first day of the HEB Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Friday.
In the first round, the Cowboys ended a three-game losing skid when they beat No. 73 DePaul, 4-2, behind a strong effort in singles play. DePaul took the lead early with the doubles point, despite an 8-2 victory from Chris Haworth and Eric West at the No. 1 spot.
The Cowboys roared back into the lead, winning four of five doubles matched to earn the victory against DePaul. The singles match at No. 6 was not finished.
Rifat Biktyakov won 6-4, 6-0, against Filip Dzanko at No. 1 singles, while West picked up his sixth win of the year, besting George Chanturia, 6-4, 7-5, in the No. 2 hole. Haworth and Trevor Horstmann each picked up victories at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots respectively.
In the semifinal match, the Cowboys fell to Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-1, to bring their record to 4-4 on the year. Only singles matches were played, with ULL winning four of the first five.
Haworth picked up the lone victory, defeating Carlin Murray of the Ragin' Cajuns at the No. 2 spot. Murray won the first set 6-3, but Haworth was able to answer, winning the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The Cowboys will return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. when they take on host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the third-place match. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
