STILLWATER, Okla. - After finishing last season with a trip to the Elite Eight, the Oklahoma State women's soccer team lead the Big 12 with four selections to the Preseason All-Big 12 soccer team in 2011.
Senior defender Melinda Mercado, senior forwards Kyndall Treadwell and Krista Lopez and junior goalkeeper AD Franch have been recognized by the Big 12 for their performances last season and their potential to be productive again this season.
Mercado, Lopez and Franch were three of four unanimous selections to the team, after helping the Cowgirls to a 20-4-2 record and the deepest postseason run in school history last season.
Mercado is a two-time First-Team All-American and last season's Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Treadwell earned All-Big 12 first team honors last season and was a member of the All-Big 12 Newcomer team in 2008.
Lopez burst onto the scene a season ago after leading the Cowgirls, and finishing second in the Big 12, with 15 goals. She also notched five assists to finish second on the team. Her outstanding season earned her All-Big 12 First Team honors.
Franch has had an enormous impact in goal for the Cowgirls the past two seasons. She is a two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection and was named to the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-America Second Team last season. In 2010, she led the league in shutouts with nine and finished second in goals against average (0.73) and save percentage (.826).
Behind OSU's four selections, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech each have two representatives. Missouri and Oklahoma have one each.
The Cowgirls begin the 2011 season with an exhibition match in Dallas against SMU on Aug. 13. They kick off the regular season at home against TCU on Aug. 19.
