AMES, Iowa (OSU Athletics Iowa State (15-9, 1-1) got on the board first when Tori Torrescano hit a solo home run in the second inning. The Cowgirls (28-7, 1-1) responded in the top of the third when Sammy Jo Diffendaffer led the inning off with a solo shot over the fence in right-center field. Two batters later, Ari Morrison hit a double to right-center field to begin a two-out rally for Oklahoma State.
Alysia Hamilton hit a single up the middle to score Morrison from second. Ward followed with a walk and Garcia scored them both with a home run to left field. Tamara Brown hit a double and later scored on a single through the right side by Diffendaffer.
Senior Mariah Gearhart led the fourth inning off with a triple down the left field line. She scored on a single from Morrison. After stealing second, Morrison scored on a single from Ward. A walk and a single advanced Ward to third and she scored on a sacrifice fly from catcher Ashley Boyd. By the end of the fourth inning the Cowgirls were leading by a score of 9-1.
Freshman Simone Freeman started in the circle for OSU and picked up the win improving to 8-4 on the season. She threw four innings, gave up five hits for one earned run, struck out five and walked one. Senior Rachel Zabriskie (9-5) picked up the loss for the Cyclones after giving up six runs off six hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Oklahoma State tacked on another five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Amy Graham pinch-hit for Tara Ettinger and led the inning off with a single to right field. After Gearhart got on base after being hit by a pitch, Morrison stepped up with her third hit of the day to score Graham from second. Hamilton followed with an RBI-single to left-center field.
Julie Ward stepped up with two runners on and hit her 10th home run of the season to make the score 14-1. Chelsea Garcia reached base for the fourth time with a single through the left side. After advancing on a passed ball, she scored the final run of the game on a throwing error by the Cyclone first baseman.
Senior Sarah Odom threw the final inning for the Cowgirls and gave up just one hits while striking out two.
Oklahoma State will take the field again on Wednesday when they play host to the Border Wars between Tulsa, Arkansas and OSU. The Cowgirls will play the Razorback at 3 p.m., Arkansas and Tulsa will play the following game and OSU will play TU at 7 p.m.
