Stillwater, Okla. -- Cowgirl senior Alysia Hamilton went 4-for-6 with five runs batted in and three runs scored as Oklahoma State's 20th-ranked softball team won a pair of games Friday evening in the Mizuno Classic. OSU defeated Minnesota 9-0 before defeating Northern Iowa in the nightcap 7-0.
The Cowgirl pitching staff was just as effective, throwing 14 scoreless innings in the two games. OSU's hurlers allowed just seven hits in the two games while striking out 16 and walking five.
Oklahoma State scored early against the Golden Gophers as Chelsea Garcia hit a three-run home run over the left field fence. That followed an RBI single by Hamilton with one out, scoring Mariah Gearhart.
The Cowgirls added two more in the third on a sacrifice fly by Garcia and a run-scoring double by Ashley Boyd. Another two-bagger by Boyd in the seventh scored Tamara Brown, and Amy Graham hit a two-run double to give OSU the 9-0 victory.
Garcia was 2-for-3 in the game with four RBIs and two runs scored. Julie Ward and Brown also scored two runs against Minnesota.
Sophomore Kat Espinosa improved to 10-2 on the season after allowing just one hit in five innings. Freshman Morgan Hawkins threw two innings of relief against Minnesota, allowing three consecutive singles in the bottom of the seventh but working out of a jam with the bases loaded.
Against Northern Iowa, Brown's two-out single to right field put the Cowgirls on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. Hamilton led off the bottom of the third with a solo homer, her fourth of the season. One inning later, a Hamilton single past the first baseman scored two more, making the score 5-0. She picked up her fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly with one out, and Ward followed with an RBI single up the middle for the 7-0 score.
Freshman pitcher Simone Freeman threw six scoreless innings, giving up just two hits while striking out nine, and improved to 7-3. Senior Sarah Odom threw the sixth inning, allowing one hit.
Oklahoma State (18-5) will play Northern Colorado (1-15) on Saturday at 1:30 pm at Cowgirl Stadium.
