STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler fired rounds of 70 and 65 on Monday during U.S. Open sectional qualifying in Columbus, Ohio to earn a spot in the field for the second consecutive year.
Fowler carded a 70 during his morning round at The Lakes Golf and Country Club before firing a 7-under 65 at Brookside Country Club during the afternoon to post his 9-under total of 135 and gain entry into the year's second major championship.
The junior-to-be made the cut at last year's Open, finishing in a tie for 60th place at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. Fowler opened with a 1-under 70 and was tied for seventh place before making the cut and eventually finishing at 13-over 297.
This year's U.S. Open will be held June 18-21 at Bethpage State Park's Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.
In addition to the 2008 U.S. Open, Fowler has also competed in a pair of PGA Tour events with starts at the 2008 Verizon Heritage and the 2009 FBR Open.
A first-team All-American each of the past two seasons, Fowler will be back in action this weekend when he looks to secure his third-straight title at the Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown, Pa. The prestigious event will take place June 11-14 at Sunnehanna Country Club.
This week also saw the announcement of the remainder of the 2009 Ping All-America squads by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Last week, Fowler and freshman Morgan Hoffmann were named first-team selections. Joining the pair were senior Trent Leon and sophomore Kevin Tway. Leon was named a third-team pick, while Tway received honorable mention recognition.
Leon made 11 starts during his final collegiate season, posting five top 10s in his first six starts. The Dallas, Texas native's best finish was a third-place showing at the Ping/Golfweek Preview last September.
An honorable mention All-American each of the past two seasons, Leon's best showing of the spring came at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate where he tied for fifth place.
Tway competed in 11 events as well, finishing with a pair of top fives. The Edmond, Okla., native placed third at the Morris Williams before earning his second career victory at the NCAA South Central Regional. Tway was an honorable mention selection as a freshman as well.
