Home Runs Propel Sooners Past Cowgirls
April 16, 2009 | Cowgirl Softball
After Dani Dobbs scored on a base hit by Stillwater-native Katie Norris, Lindsey Vandever hit a three-run home run as the Sooners took a 4-0 lead. OU added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a grand slam by Amber Flores.
Oklahoma State had opportunities to score in both the first and second innings. The Cowgirls had runners on first and second with one out in the first, but Sooner starter D.J. Mathis struck out Julie Ward and Megan Castle to end the inning.
OSU had a similar situation in the top of the second. With one out, both Ashley Boyd and Chelsea Garcia walked. However, Kelsey Anchors popped out to third base and Mariah Gearhart flew out to right field to end the threat.
Oklahoma State put its lone run on the board in the fourth. Boyd, starting just her 13th game of the season due to an injury suffered by catcher Sam Heinlein, hit a solo home run that cleared not only the wall in left field but the 15-foot chain link fence beyond the outfield bleachers. It was her first home run of the season.
The Cowgirls (28-15 overall, 4-7 Big 12) will travel to Ames, Iowa, this weekend to take on the Iowa State Cyclones. Game times are set for 2 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
