Oklahoma State "Kicks-Off" Season with Big Win

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 21 Oklahoma State men's tennis team kicked off the 2009 season with a win against No. 44 Penn State as part of a four-team ITA Kick-Off Weekend from the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center.
The meet came down to the final match as OSU sophomore Anton Bobytskyi rebounded to defeat Ryan Gormley 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. Bobytskyi's win solidified the Oklahoma State victory.
In #1 singles, fifth-ranked Oleksandr Nedovyesov cruised in straight sets against Adam Slagter, 6-3, 6-2. The Cowboy junior and 2008 Big 12 Player of the Year is looking to improve on a record-setting sophomore season.
Senior Nathan Byrnes stormed back from a first set loss to defeat Brendan Lynch 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. The Melbourne, Australia, native competed in the #3 singles and #1 doubles with teammate Nedovyesov. The duo rolled over an Adam Slagter/Jason Lee tandem, 8-3.
Cowboy newcomer Mikhail Trukshanin was impressive in his collegiate debut picking up a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Eddie Bourchier in #2 singles.
“Anton (Bobytskyi) played really well,” coach James Wadley said. “There was a lot of pressure against him with Penn State's home crowd, but he pulled it out in the final set. As a team, we were not very sharp as it was the first match of the season. We hope to play better tomorrow. Florida State is a very solid team, and they have played six matches already.”
Oklahoma State will face No. 18 Florida State Sunday at 9 a.m. in the final round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Florida State defeated No. 33 Duke in the first round, 5-0.
