Cowboys Knock Off UTA in Season Opener
November 22, 2005 | Cowboy Basketball
In a game in which Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton wasn't courtside because of chronic back pain, the Cowboys struggled to pull away until late in the second half.
Curry connected on a three-point basket with 9:24 remaining, putting the Cowboys up 53-46. Texas-Arlington cut the lead to two, 53-51, on a 3-pointer by Brady Dawkins, but Oklahoma State maintained its advantage with a quick 7-0 run.
After a Texas-Arlington basket by Steven Thomas trimmed the Cowboys lead to 60-53, Curry made his third three-point basket of the game with 6:35 remaining, stretching the margin to 10. Texas-Arlington never threatened again.
Roderick Flemings scored 11 points and Byron Eaton and Torre Johnson each added 10 for the Cowboys.
Boggan, a forward and junior college transfer, scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half.
Curry struggled to shake free from Texas-Arlington defenders early in the game, but managed 9 points on 3-of-7 shooting in the first.
Texas-Arlington benefited from the inside play of forwards Thomas and Jermaine Griffin. Thomas led the Mavericks with 15 points and Griffin added 8.
Texas-Arlington also got a spark from guard Dawkins, who scored 13 points, including three three-point baskets.
