TANAGURA, Japan - Oklahoma State freshman Karin Sj?d?n shot a school-record 65 in her first action as a collegian, and the Cowgirls took a seven-stroke lead after the first round of the 2002 TOPY Cup U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship here Tuesday.
As a team, OSU shot a seven-under-par 281, while second-place Tohoku Fukushi shot even par. Ohio State, the only other American university in the tournament, shot a five-over 293. N.S.S.U shot a 14-over 302, while Nihon shot a 20-over 308.
Sj?d?n's teammates also fared well. Sophomore Annie Thurman, who won both the Utah Women's State Amateur and the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links this past summer, shot a one-under-par 71, while senior Linda Wessberg was one-stroke back at 72. Cowgirl sophomore Jenny Karr shot a one-over 73, and senior Christi Cano finished with a 77.
Sj?d?n, who shot eight birdies and an eagle during her first collegiate round, also shot three bogeys, including two of the last three holes. She leads second-place T. Kanai by four strokes.
Her 65 is the best single-round score by an individual in school history. The previous record was a 66, shot by Val Skinner at the 1981 Sooner Invitational. The team's score of 281 is also the lowest in Cowgirl history by three strokes. The previous best was a 284 shot at the 1981 Lamar Invitational.
The tournament will continue on Wednesday with another round of 18 holes, and conclude on Thursday with a final round of 18.
