Monday's Game
Oklahoma State dedicates its new arena in the first Big Monday game of the
Big 12 season when the Cowboys host Iowa State in an 8 p.m. tipoff. OSU is
looking to bounce back from a 78-71 loss Saturday at No. 24 Texas while the
Cyclones are fresh from a 100-80 victory over No. 15 Oklahoma in the
conference's opening weekend.
OSU-Iowa State: The Series
Iowa State's two victories last season -- 72-61 in Ames on Feb. 26 and 68-64
in the Big 12 Tournament on March 11 --pushed the Cyclones ahead in the
all-time series by a 50-49 edge and snapped OSU's four-game winning streak
between the schools. Despite the losses, OSU has won 11 of the last 14
meetings overall and 10 straight in Stillwater.
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 11th year at OSU and his 31st
year overall. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament
eight times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 667-262 (71.8 percent)
overall and is 237-98 (70.7 percent) at OSU. Sutton is the only coach to
take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament.
A quick look at Saturday's game
OSU is playing its third game in six days but has four of its next five in
Gallagher-Iba Arena ... OSU is 1-1 this season against ranked teams, the
Cowboys defeated then-No. 21 Arkansas 74-73 on Dec. 9 in Tulsa and lost
Saturday at No. 24 Texas 78-71 ... The Cowboys' last loss to Iowa State in
Stillwater came March 2, 1988. Included in the 10-game winning streak
against the Cyclones are four victories when ISU was ranked in the top 25
... OSU is 13-6 all-time on Big Monday, including victories over Kansas (at
home) and Missouri (in Columbia) last season.
OSU dedicates new home during Monday's game
Oklahoma State will hold its grand opening and dedication of the new
13,611-seat Gallagher-Iba Arena on Monday. Doors to the arena will open at 6
p.m. -- 30 minutes earlier than usual -- in order to accommodate some of the
functions taking place Monday evening. Among the planned ceremonies are an
invitation-only reception in the building's new O-Club Room, releasing "the
spirit of Gallagher-Iba Arena" back into the new facility, and a special
recognition of the contribution to OSU Athletics of all Oklahoma State
students from all generations.
Foul trouble helps doom Cowboys' league opener
With OSU's leading scorer, Maurice Baker, on the bench with four fouls,
Texas went on a 19-7 run early in the second half and held on to beat OSU
78-71 Saturday in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Both Baker and starting
backcourt mate Victor Williams eventually fouled out, and the Cowboys were
unable to take full advantage of a 40-to-30 advantage in free-throw attempts
-- the 40 charity tries were a season high and the most in a road game since
the Cowboys attempted 42 in an 82-76 victory at Tulsa on Dec. 31, 1991. The
loss was OSU's fifth in as many trips to Austin since the inception of the
Big 12.
Baker makes Cowboys history with triple-double
Maurice Baker had 19 points and career highs of 14 rebounds, 10 assists and
five steals in the Wednesday victory over Texas-San Antonio. The performance
made him just the second Cowboy to record a triple-double and the first to
do so through the conventional points-rebounds-assists method. Joe Atkinson
was previously the only OSU player with a triple-double, he had 10 points,
11 rebounds and 10 blocked shots against New Orleans on Jan. 5, 1985.
Baker has bolted toward the top of the list of early contenders for the Big 12's newcomer-of-the-year award. The 6-1 guard leads OSU in scoring (18.3 ppg), rebounds (6.6 rpg), assists (4.5 apg) and steals (2.5 per game) and scored a career-high 26 points at Texas despite playing a career-low 29 minutes. The UTSA game marked the second time this season that Baker has led OSU in points, rebounds, assists and steals in the same game (he also did so at Wichita State), before this season, no player had accomplished that feat since the 1996-97 season. Baker was the Big 12 player of the week Dec. 5 and the rookie of the week Dec. 12.
Cowboys cruise to victory vs. UTSA
Oklahoma State scored the first eight points of the game and rolled to an
88-63 victory over Texas-San Antonio on Wednesday in Stillwater. OSU led
19-3 just over seven minutes into the game, and UTSA never got within less
than eight points after that. The Cowboys pulled down 57 rebounds, the
fifth-best total in school history, and had a 20-carom edge over the
Roadrunners.
Jonzen renews scoring touch
Swedish import Fredrik Jonzen, whose breakout performance in last year's
postseason earned him All-East Region honors in the NCAA Tournament, had the
biggest scoring week of his career in the Cowboys' two games before
Christmas. He hit for a career-high 22 points in the victory over
Arkansas-Little Rock on Dec. 19 and then topped that number with 26 points
against Lamar on Dec. 22. Jonzen is shooting 61.6 percent from the field on
the season, ranked 12th nationally according to STATS, Inc.
Sanders' scoring returns in recent games
Sophomore forward Melvin Sanders, one of three OSU players to start every
game, scored 10 points in each of the first two games. But his shooting
touch eluded him in the Cowboys' next five outings as he failed to reach
double figures again. However, Sanders has responded with three
double-figure scoring games in the past four OSU contests. He hit his first
four shots against UTSA on his way and finished 7-for-12 with a career-high
16 points. Sanders also scored 13 points against Texas and has averaged 11.3
points in the past four games after averaging just 4.0 per outing in the
previous five.
Victor Williams continues solid play
Transfer guard Victor Williams, who came to OSU after a year at Illinois
State, scored 17 points in the victory over Texas-San Antonio, giving him
his best scoring output since the second game of the year, when he tallied
20 times at North Texas. Williams hit a season-high three three-pointers
against UTSA, making him the first Cowboy other than Baker to hit more than
one trey in a game. Williams scored 11 points and tied a season high with
four assists in the UALR victory and came back with 13 points against Lamar
for the first back-to-back 10-point games of his OSU career. The 5-10 guard
is second on the team in assists (3.6 apg), free-throw percentage (74.4) and
steals (19).
Keep makes opener a memorable one
The highly anticipated first game in the new Gallagher-Iba Arena was already
a big watercooler topic in Oklahoma the week before Christmas, but Jason
Keep made it the topic. Keep, who had played just three minutes before
entering the game with 5:40 remaining, scored six points, all on dunks, in
the game's final 5:25. But the last of his dunks will be the lasting memory
of the home opener. Keep stole a UALR pass at midcourt, dribbled up the
floor and shattered the backboard with a dunk. It's believed to be the only
time an OSU player has broken a backboard during a game, both Bryant Reeves
(during a shoot-around the day before OSU's 1995 Final Four appearance) and
Desmond Mason (during warmups before the Basketball Bash in November 1996)
had shattered glass in public appearances, however. Keep's dunk made
highlight reels around the country -- it was CNN's "Play of the Day" and was
featured in ESPN's top highlights of the year -- as well as earning "Big
Dady" an appearance on ESPN Radio's "Dan Patrick Show."
On the air
OSU games are broadcast on the Cowboy Radio Network with KWTV's Bill Teegins
handling play-by-play duties and Tom Dirato, OSU coordinator of radio & TV,
providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their 10th year as the
Cowboys' basketball radio team, Dirato is calling OSU basketball for the

Oklahoma State plays host to Texas Tech on Jan. 13 in a 3 p.m. ESPN+ game
before hitting the road again to face Baylor on Jan. 17. OSU returns home
Jan. 20 to face former Cowboy Bryndon Manzer's St. Gregory's team.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 11th year at his alma mater
with a 237-98 record at the school as well as a 667-262 overall mark in his
31st year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to
postseason play in nine of 10 years and has won 20 games or more eight
times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the
600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years
or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry
Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only one active coach (Tarkanian) ranks ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and Sutton is the 26th person overall and the fifth active boss to coach 900 NCAA games. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky -- with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
