Cowgirls Crown Two Champions at Aggie Invitational

The Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team saved the best for last as the Cowgirls crowned two individual champions and won five of their eight individual matches on the final day of competition at the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. on Sunday.

“We are happy with our results,” Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “This is the first tournament of the year so everything is experimental. We played well today but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Our goal is to prepare for regionals and we are going to work hard to be ready for it.”

Nataliya Shatkovskaya continued to impress in her first weekend wearing the orange and black for the Cowgirls. The freshman downed New Mexico State’s Anne Fagegaltier, 6-2, 6-0, to win the Flight C championship.

The Cowgirls got their second title of the day when junior Jessica Collins earned a hard fought victory over New Mexico State’s Paulina Zuniga, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, in the Flight F finale.

The lone loss for the Cowgirls in championship singles play came when Zuzanna Osinska was beaten in a back and forth match against New Mexico’s Jennifer Ryba, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, in Flight E.

In other championship action, Yawna Allen and Shatkovskaya took on New Mexico’s talented duo of Iva Gersic and Lucy Scott in Flight A doubles. Allen and Shatkovskaya looked sharp early but fell in the end 8-4.

Looking to redeem herself after a disappointing, 6-0, 6-0, loss on Saturday, Cowgirl Lauren Simmons regrouped on Sunday and got a shutout of her own beating Lee College’s Natalie Araya 6-0, 6-0.

Iryna Tkachenko was victorious for the second straight day as the junior cruised to an impressive straight-sets victory over Northern Arizona’s Susan McClelland 6-4, 6-1.
