Cowgirl Tennis Opens Fall Season in Kansas City

Sept. 21, 2012

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team kicked off its fall season today at the Missouri Aces for the Cure Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

The Cowgirls opened the day with two first round doubles matches against tournament host Missouri. The No. 14 ranked doubles team in the nation, Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana, fell short in the first match of the day, losing 8-6. Junior Meghan Blevins and senior C.C. Sardinha notched an 8-6 win in the second match. Freshman Maria Alvarez also competed in doubles today. Alvarez and Joan Cannon of Princeton teamed up in an extra match, but fell 8-5 to Carol Benito and Belen Rivera of Tulsa.

In the second round of doubles competition, Oklahoma State took on Princeton. Once again, Rose and Narattana couldn't pull out the victory, falling in the tiebreaker that would give the No. 57 ranked doubles team of Lindsay Graff and Katherine Flanigan a 9-8 victory. Blevins and Sardinha were also defeated in their match, giving up an 8-6 loss to Katie Goepel and Monica Chow of Princeton. Alvarez and Tulsa's Belen Rivera were defeated in an 8-4 loss to Amanda Muliawan and Emily Hahn of Princeton in another extra match.

While most things didn't go the Cowgirls' way today, Maria Alvarez picked up her first collegiate victory in singles play. Alvarez was the only Cowgirl to win her match, beating Tulsa's Saana Sarteinen with a score of 6-2, 6-3.

Cowgirl Tennis will begin their second day in Kansas City with a doubles match against Tulsa at 9 a.m.
